N55 8SPD AT Transmissions...

So, a week or two ago I blew the cold side charge pipe on my F30 and took it to the dealer to have it serviced and fixed. During that time I was given the keys to a 2016 340i loaner car... also with the 8spd Auto and M-sport package just like my car.

I won't get into the discussion about how much better, stronger and more responsive it felt compared to my 2014 N55 car... BUT, one of the more surprising things for me was how smooth the gearbox felt.

Now, I realize that I'm comparing mine (with 35k miles) to a (nearly) new car with 2200 miles on the clock however it got me thinking about the condition of my transmission.

Can anyone else chime in about how smooth their 1-2 shifts and 2-3 shifts are?

I'll clarify... in comfort mode, normal drive setting the 1-2 shift for my car with light throttle is pretty jerky. The same shift transition in the 340i was seamless in every gear.

If I'm mashing on my car in sport mode the shift is smooth and fast, but it's pretty annoying in stop and go traffic since it gets pretty lumpy at low speeds.

My car was recently serviced before I purchased it since it was a CPO. Does anyone know the service limit to the transmission fluid?

Does anyone know of software changes or updates related to the gearbox? Are these things known to shift harder as they get older with mileage?

I appreciate anyone's input, thanks for reading.

yeah my 1-2, 2-3 shifts in comfort are pretty jerky as well. i just thought it was a natural consequence of all the torque in our cars. dunno

Yes, it is an updated gearbox. Your N55 is paired to a ZF 8HP45. The B58s come paired to a ZF 8HP50 which has revisions to reduce drag and as you felt it operates more smoothly.

Ah! Well I can certainly feel it. Was night and day to me when I was driving that 340i around. Sigh... more reasons to buy one of those things now!

My 2013 n55 shifts smoothly all the time. I'm at 36k and modded. I'd reset the trans adaptations and see if that resolves the jerkiness. That did the trick in my old e90.

Can you elaborate on more on what you did to reset it?

Maybe I'm being dramatic, it doesn't shift BAD, it's just not as seamless as the 340's gearbox was. I was super impressed with how smooth that thing changed gears under any load.

Low speed shifts in sport mode (1-2) have a bit of a lunge to them. Every other gear is super smooth. It may not be an issue, and it makes sense since there seems to have been a transmission upgrade for the new model as well as the engine.

every car I have every owned shifts and drives smoother when it's brand new vs has a few years on it, the tolerances and bushings on the drive train just wear in and down. Granted I own manuals only.

Totally understand that. This has been the first auto car I've owned in the last 14 years lol. Perhaps I'm over thinking it. I still say I was spoiled by that 340i. Hehe

It's probably your driving style. The new (loaner) car hasn't adapted.
