I am hoping someone could help me out. I just had Ohlins R&T coilovers with Millway street camber plates professionally installed on my 2018 340i xdrive. There is a creaky, clicking and sometimes minor clunking sound coming from around the front suspension which is very audible from the cabin when driving. The clicking type sound is persistent over 99% of road surfaces. The minor clunking sound only seems to come from the passenger front suspension over only certain bumps in the road. The squeaking/spring binding sound is just usually when turning the wheel at low speeds. My mechanic has pinpointed the persistent clicking as coming from
the upper strut bearing which he said is likely worn out. He said to purchase new ones which I have and have yet to be installed. Could anyone please provide any insight or experience they may have had with a similar experience associated with these specific upgrades or ones similar? I love the new suspension setup, it has completely transformed the way the car feels and handles, it’s unreal how impressive it’s capabilities now are. Although, these sounds are a real downer especially considering the quality of the parts installed and the fact they were installed by a trusted and experience mechanic. Someone please help. I will live with these annoying sounds considering how incredible the car’s handling performance and overall ride quality has improved but I’d really like to get rid of them. It sucks.

Having the same setup but not this behavior I would have them check the top nut. Else take a photo of the strut and make sure there's a a rubber washer on either end of the spring. My first install had binding because this was missing. The shop had mistakenly put it on the wrong end, but that is because we realized there was a part to reuse from the stock tophat as well.

I can't provide a conclusive diagnosis until my F31 goes in to my suspension experts later this year but I strongly suspect that the noise is caused by the dampers themselves.

My car has been running Ohlins R&T (along with a raft of other aftermarket items including Millway top mounts) since 2017 and the noises being generated and transmitted into the cabin are now at ridiculous levels. It's the stuff of nightmares.

I'll provide a detailed write-up after the dampers have been replaced but until then my recommendation is not to go chasing these noises - you could end up (like I have) chasing ghosts and wasting money changing other components for no reason.

Thanks. Could you please clarify something though? You said rubber washer on either end of the spring then say the shop had mistakenly put it on the wrong end, which contradicts the first thing you said.

Thanks. That’s a bummer. What kind of noises are being generated? I find it odd that the noise would be coming from the damper itself. The main and persistent noise for me is the clicking coming from the upper strut bearing (which my mechanic seems sure of in regards to the source). I’m really hoping the new upper strut bearings I purchased solve that problem. Not sure how my mechanic will tackle the binding sound or the occasional light clunking sound.

The ohlins come with two sets, one soft rubber and one hard plastic. The soft rubber was in the wrong place and it partially tore from the spring trying to spin on top of it. Realizing this and setting it up correctly the front spring would have been metal on metal with the camber plate. That's where the oe top mount bushing came into play.
