Do you know when they fixed it? I have a 2017 that was built in 03/2017.
Actually I don't just based on what was said in this thread.

I have the same symptoms as OP on my M240i. Happened during my Covid drive-through vaccine. Car started smoking and whistling like a teapot on 4.1 and was shaking upon unloading from the tow truck.

If it is the valve cover & PCV, I hope it’s replaced with an updated part that won’t have this issue again. I’ll be getting my second injection 4.22 at the same drive through so I guess that will be a good test… however, it never had any issues during any of my drive-through Covid tests.

Omg! Same thing has happened to me twice! I knew I wasn't crazy. Mine will make a loud whistle sound too. I was idling for 40 minutes. It has been modified, but did it before that. I have 80k miles. This is an issue and need to be resolved. Thanks for sharing this.

UPDATE

UPDATE : My car finally went in to my local dealership, and they diagnosed it within an hour. It turns out that the PCV Valve Diaphragm is shot, and needs replacing. That seems to be the cause of the white smoke.

Apparently this happens more to six cylinder cars than four cylinder cars, according to my dealer.

I've ordered an upgraded part from Vader solutions, and am currently waiting for the part to arrive. The moment it comes in, it's going on.

I'm not running any big boost or turbo, I ordered this part because some have said this is a massive upgrade from the stock PCV, even for stock cars like mine.

Also found a video on pretty much the same issue -

Pretty scary stuff, glad you were able to (slightly) resolve it. It's been a pretty well documented and discussed topic in the "B58 Enthusiasts" page on Facebook.

Thanks hellab. Something is better than nothing at this point

One of the quirks of owning such amazing cars.

Oh for sure. I just picked up my 2016 340i a month ago, and I've been having an absolute blast, even in stock form. I've been keeping an eye on the coolant tank, and when I got the car it was pretty dry so I've topped it off. I just checked again today and had to top off both tanks by a splash; gonna keep monitoring it and if it gets really bad I'll have to get a mechanic to look at it (no warranty ) but for now it's fine for me to keep topping off since I already bought the gallon concentrate from BMW anyways

Hate bringing back a thread from the grave, but this is the exact same situation I had this morning. Freaked me out! I just bought the car 2 months ago (2016 340i) and I was crushed to think I might have blown the engine, or the turbo or anything as I am getting so excited about modifying it. I come from the older Honda days of B16/18 swaps, and big turbos on tiny engines.

Anyway... As everyone else, I was extended idling (though my idle is dead on at 14.7:1 AFR (BM3 datalogging), I didn't think fuel in the oil would be an issue...

It's cold right now where I am and while waiting for work to open the gate, my car is idling with the heat on (don't want to say how long because you'll all curse me! Hahaha... but it is... a whiiiile... and it's everyday! . This morning, the rpms bobbled around, and the car started chugging a bit next thing I know it's blowing smoke across the parking lot!

I'll check the PCV diaphragm...

I have been using Google to research my car and this forum seems to pop up the most, so I decidced to make an account here and check it out. So far, it's been one of the better forums! Thanks for all the informative posts! Hopefully I'll be able to start contributing info of value as well...

There is a recall for this to replace PCV valve. It is a common issue.

Hey guys. So this just happened to my 2017 340i. I was in a car wash line idling for about 45 mins and then a loud whistling sound appeared and excessive white smoke from my exhaust with a smell of either oil/gas. Turned it off popped the hood no leaks or smoke from the bay and all lines were secure. No over heating either. Let it sit for about 30 mins started it up again and it was running fine. Again no lights or CEL. I Drive reports all systems good. I drove the car home (about 25 min drive) and it ran like nothing ever happened. Called my tech brought the car in on a tow the next day. They ran diagnostics, again no faults reported, they drove the car about 10 miles, then ran the car on the lift for an extended period of time. Then drove it again when it was cold. No symptoms. Also checked the pcv diaphragm for punctures and nothing. I’m scratching my head on this one. Anyone with any insight would be greatly appreciated. (56k on the dash oil changes every 3k on the dot) (stage 2 flash tune/intake/ careless dp) tech said the injectors are fine and my sparks were changed at 25k and 50k.
