Absolutely agreed. It's the undertaking and tailgating loons that need to be fined, they're the dangerous drivers.

And then your insurance probably going up £50 to £100 a year for the next 4 years. And that will be on every policy you are a named driver on.

Happened to me 15 odd years ago and its quite costly over time, getting points. Mine and the wife's policy's went up.

Although to be fair I got 2 sets of points about 1 year apart. But not had any since, touch wood.

3 points and you're fine insurance wise. Insurers get nervous when you have 6 points or more though.....

Mine was in 2013, 53mph in a 40, approaching a 50 mph speed limit, by a mobile van. Too high for a course so it was £100 and 3 points.

It didn't affect my insurance premium that year but did have to keep declaring it for 5 years.

And what jet powered ambulances do you know that will be gaining on you at 81mph

They struggle to do 60!

They can’t increase tour premium in the current year but will probably mAke up for it in the next 5 as you say.

As goram said earlier, I don't think 3 points for one relatively minor offence will make much difference to the OP's insurance premium (if any); however, once you get to 6 points it becomes a different story....

You’ve hit the nail on the head there.

Just had my second NIP after nearly 40 yrs driving - doing 81 on a 70 mph dual carriageway on the way to Cornwall. Created a hill and around the bend on a bridge you guessed it a “safety” camera van.

Awaiting to see if I get points or a SAC.

Incidentally the first time I challenged the NIP as the fixed camera
was horizontal on a downward slopped road Never heard back from them but strangely the camera got readjusted. Made me wonder how many other folks have been tagged on this and other poorly fitted cameras.

So paid the £100 and sent the plastic card license off

Came back with the same paperwork but stamped "processed" in red and my license back

There is no where showing my points or what I've been done for ?

Caught speeding AGAIN

I got stopped last October on a local road I use regularly for doing 31 in a 20. I genuinely thought it was a 30 limit and told the copper. My borough went 20mph on all minor side/residential roads years ago but this was more of a main artery. He explained that it had been 30 until last year when it was changed and pointed out the sign half way up the road - which was no bigger than a football on a pole. Took all my details on a laptop and said I'd most likely get points and a fine. All very courteous and civilised. Never heard from them since.

I think you can check your license online for points which have been applied at www.gov.uk/view-driving-license

In my experience 3 pts does affect your insurance premiums for the next 5 years and any you are a named driver on but it varies a lot by insurer. One son removed me as named driver and saved money the younger son experimented on a higher performance car and found he was still better off to have me named. I'm guessing some of the more expensive insurers who reward loyalty more maybe won't charge you more but if you shop around for the cheapest each year you will find it makes a difference - that's my experience anyway - just run a quote on a comparison site with and without 3 points and see...

The A30 & A303s are the worst roads in the southwest for speed vans in locations that by the time you spot them it is too late - and they are almost always on them somewhere. I got caught from 800 meters on the A303 a while ago and my car was filthy at the time so they just took another when I was much nearer where you could make out my reg - but they prosecuted on the illegible one - presumably I wasn't over the limit on the closer one - did wonder about challenging it - I mean could they prove it was the same car - it was a 5 series, plenty about... I got all the photos but still couldn't work out where on earth they'd tucked the van away... But the risk of being slapped with a means tested fine and more points made me just take the 3 points - at the end of the day I was speeding - I know that... as I know what speed I set my cruise control at... I guess that is really how they get away with most of these - they are really calling your bluff...

Posting to this thread again. Just received a NIP in the post after being caught doing 66 in a 50 on the M25. No point me trying to dispute it as I'm bang to rights. I remember exactly where it was, I moved in to the very long and empty slip road for the A41 exit and sped up, forgetting I was supposed to be in a 50 zone. I never noticed a camera go but there I am in their photo evidence.

Question is, does any have any experience of what the outcome might be? Currently don't have any points. I was hoping for a best-case scenario of £100 + 3 points but a lot of research says I'm past that threshold and it could be court. Obviously, I'll plead guilty and hope I get a lenient punishment.

The letter says, ‘what to expect’, a conditional offer or educational course. However, it says I ‘may’ qualify for conditional offer. It seems I’m beyond the education course as that max’s out at 64mph.

Yes, too fast to get a speed awareness course but I think you'll just get 3 points and £100 fine. To get a court summons for speeding in a 50 zone you'd need to be doing 76 or over so you're safe on that front.

I'm amazed I never received a fine. Are you most likely to get caught by vans on bridges when speeding on the motorway? Relying on waze users to warn me, seems to have worked so far

In truth, by the time you've seen a van, it's clocked your speed - think they can work for up to 1/2 mile on a straight, but no expert.

Sounds like you've been lucky!

Won't get SAC, speed too high. Likely 3 pts, £100. Court would end up at 4 pts and a fine equivalent to your relevant weekly income, less 33% for a guilty plea.

I’ve only been caught once thankfully. I took a speed awareness course and it made no difference to my insurance the following year
