Finally all parts came in and my car returned from the dealer with radiator guard installed. The service visit was 3 days, requiring installation of a new radiator. Only a newer radiator can accommodate radiator guard. The RealOEM diagram clearly shows it.
6 months from start to finish including waiting for the parts. |

I have a 2018 340i xdrive with 6MT, M Sport
My car was produced on or about 10 Dec 2017 and did not have rock guards. Process from start to finish was about three weeks to get rock guards including two visits to service department and multiple calls/emails to BMW NA and local dealer. Parts list attached. My take aways from the experience: BMW NA and BMW Service & Sales personnel seemed ignorant about the issue and initially gave me the run around You need to be persistence to get it fixed; I told BMW NA and dealer personnel that I would go wide and far on social media to get the issue resolved BMW eventually acknowledged the issue and agreed to make it right |

Just took my car in today because the A/C wasnt working properly and the idle was kinda rough. The radiator got punctured without me knowing. They agreed to have to radiator replaced under warranty AND the rock guard installed. My heart skipped a couple beats when he told me the price of the repairs, but then told me it would be covered while its not supposed to be. I feel that today is my lucky day!

The luck was on your side. Congratulations. What was the quoted price for all repairs?

There is NO WAY I would have gave them the green light to do it. Since its still safe to drive, I would have kept driving it with A/C off and go on shopping spree for a used rad or maybe even go aftermarket and DIY myself a rock guard with black mesh. Must have been one hell of a hole. Never noticed it personally. I will try to get firm pricing when I go back to pickup my car later today. Dropped my car there yesterday around 9am and they were supposed to receive the parts this morning; so great turn around time for such a repair. But still... Cant even consider a rad repair would cost that much; even if OEM parts are used.

The dealer was correct in advising that a new radiator would be needed. The newer radiator part number has mount points for the radiator guards.
Hindsight being 20/20, BMW should have included radiator guards in early production models. |

Interesting. Last week i bought a 2016 340i at carmax. The AC was working on test drive and then i didn't use it for a few days and now it just blows hot.
I'm curious if this is the culprit? And good thing it's under warranty. Although I'm a bit confused as i have the main radiator in the front, also a passenger and driver side radiator in front of the wheel wells. I also have LED fog lights. Reading the thread seems this shouldn't be possible?(edit: i just realized i don't have the extra oil cooler so nevermind) |

When I brought mine in and described the problem first thing SA said was probably a rock. Sure enough, few days later called to say a small rock hit radiator, not covered. But then I found the radiator diagram and saw the rock guards. Went in next day and showed him and that mystified them. They reached out to regional manager with info about the rock guards, but regional guys plan was just deny and hope you go away. So I contacted NA and asked them a series of questions that they had no answers for. Next day had email from NA covering everything as a "courtesy". It's not, it's poor design that should be covered as a known issue. |

Depending on what happens with mine, I'm going to see if they can just fix the ac and id rather put up some kind of mesh. I can't see their guards being that great.
