Flash back to stock and lock the DME, this will pass the checksum. Do the drive cycle to set the reediness monitors, this will pass the monitors. Remove any mods that aren't legal in CA, that gets you to pass the visual.

If the tip is big enough sometimes those details are overlooked

Hopefully not a stupid question but anyone *not* flash back to stock and actually fail or get flagged? Now that this law has been implemented for a while, I'm just curious how thoroughly they do check, and whether this is more of a scare tactic or an actual crackdown on tunes.

It's not a thing about being thorough, its about math and it's automatic. The checksum is just adding up all the 1's and 0's in the DME's code. Compare that value to a known good value. If your checksum is off, you fail. Any changes to the factory tune will change your value, so you fail. |

I just passed smog with MGFlasher flashed back to stock and relocked the ECM - did drive cycle in a day and was ready for smog the next. I left the Xhp Transmission tune active and had no issues.

Unlocking and tuning takes about 5 minutes. Re-flashing an unlocked DME takes about 2 min. |

Just smogged my car today with BM3 flashed back to stock for CA Smog.
I originally tried to pass off a high flow cat for a smog. The guy failed me like an a hole, told me my oxygen sensor isn't ready and collected $75 anyways. I returned back to stock, took it to another place my house in SF. I told him I returned the intake, downpipe, and ECU back to stock. It's flashed back to stock with a stock map and locked ECU. He gave me a lecture about how I should protect the environment. He did a "light" inspection and hooked it up to the computer. He said the Smog computer gave the green light within 10 minutes, but I should still do my part in keeping it stock.
So if you flash back to stock for BM3, LOCK the ECU after flashing back to stock and drive for at least 100+ miles for oxygen sensor to reset and other crap. I drove 400 miles. |

stuckyducky - thank you.
This is the simplest to follow BM3-smog-process I've read so far. I got to do the same next year and I'm pretty much all stock and on stage-1. |

Amen!
You live in California, that is your reality. Just go back to stock every 2 yrs for smog. You don't like it then there are other 49 states to move too. I use to pay $300 to pass an SR20DET powered Silvia. California life. |
