Steering Wheel Stuck - Wont turn - F34 335D X drive
Sorry if this topic has been covered already. Did search before posting but most threads i found talk about the steering lock security device or other threads talking about ELV locks for the E90 range of cars. From what i have found out the F3x doesnt have the ELV lock on the steering.
I have recently bought a F34 from Copart (rash decision and spur of the moment thing - Regret it ever since) Bought with a failed engine. Had that taken care of and the engine now runs, However the steering is locked and stuck. It will not turn, It never has since ive had it. First assumed it was down to engine being in bits (when i got the car the cylinder head and everything was off and in the boot) Cleared all the existing codes i can using Carly but still shows some steering wheel angle sensor fault but reading up on that fault code doesn't seem to suggest this could cause the steering wheel to lock totally. It wont move at all. Few other faults as well but none relating to steering. On the Idrive it does say transmission fault but full performance not available. Can clear codes and get the gone but comes back. Engine starts and runs (now), Gearbox selects gears and able to move forward and back. Battery was totally flat when i got the car but is now charging and does start the car itself without needed a jump start. Car currently with a local vehicle electrician (but not a BmW specialist as none local to me that can take the car) I have just bought the ISTA software (which came with loads of other BMW software but no cable and no clue how to use it) Currently awaiting the ENet cable so i can connect to the car but anyone else had this issue or know what i need to be looking for? Any Help would be appreciated and will share any solutions found. |

Update:
So the mechanic called and said its the steering column that needs replacing. But from what i can see and found out the column itself doesn't have any aprts that would prevent the steering from turning. More likely the actual Rack.
When i rung around to find the column from a scrappy they asked if the CAS had been flashed and checked etc. as that may be preventing the steering from turning as the CAS acts like the ELV in the E9x cars. Anyone know how i can use ISTA and see if my CAS is ok? |

From what I've read thought the common fault it the knocking noise which isn't what my car is suffering. The local garage said they finally managed to get the wheel to now turn but it was making a noise and the rack is defo gone so needs replacing. I've given them the go ahead to replace the rack but still think it was CAS based issue. Does anyone know if the rack needs programing to the CAS is the rack is replaced? |
