Clunking sound from brakes
19k miles on my 2020 440. When backing up or moving forward after backing up, I hear what sounds like loose brakes pads. I suspect this is not normal, correct? I fear wasting yet another afternoon at the dealer waiting for them to tell me it's normal and they can't / won't fix it.

Try the G20 forums
On the F chassis it's commonly reported with big brakes and is normal. |

Curious about this one...4 series is still on the F chassis, so this is the right place.
OP, could be a leaf or some debris you picked up, or something rubbing...you could take the wheels off and do some looking around, or just waste that afternoon at the dealer after all... There have been some complaints about parking brake cables rubbing on something.. Last edited by im_an_alien; 09-16-2020 at 10:49 AM.. |

The parking brake issue is for a clip that deteriorates over several years and is not an issue he'd be experiencing. |

The usual cause is insufficient brake grease on the pad to carrier interfaces. When you back up and then apply the brakes it pulls the pads in the opposite direction of normal. If the pads aren't properly greased they resist that, causing the clunk. Then you pull forward reversing the force on the pads, and they clunk again. It's an easy fix as far as greasing them goes, but does require removing the pads, so a lazy mechanic is inclined to just do a visual check to see if everything looks OK, and then says "It's normal". It's not.
