According to BMW they build the turbos to have some wastegate play as soon as engine is off or just turning on (cold). Lot's of owners complained about it and even with a turbo swap, it was good for less than 1K and rattle returned. Now, if you have wastegate play and rattle when you rev the engine after it is fully warmed up than that is an issue. You can always manually adjust the arm a full turn or half a turn in to take the slack out and make the turbo last longer if tight on cash. But you will need a new turbo sooner than later.

(In my case) the dealer said actuator couldn't be replaced without the entire turbo so they replaced my turbo on warranty.

Should not matter though. It still got actuator arm and valve itself. I too have electric actuator and got some rattling. But when I try to move the valve axle by hand I feel only very little play in it. So I'm not sure if it's this problem. I would say it's fine and something else is rattling. Do you feel any play on your wastegate axle if trying to move it by hand? Only try with cold engine of course.

Would this be considered excessive play?
