Guidance on 340i Touring pricing (selling)
Hi all,
Long time lurker here. I've enjoyed reading the content on this forum for some time so thought I would gauge the thoughts of everyone on the current market for a 340 touring. Used car prices are all over the place at the moment so it's hard to know what to sell it for. Given there aren't too many available at any one time (11 only on Autotrader currently ranging from £24k to £35k spec / age dependent?) it's hard to know. Clearly listed prices vs selling prices are also two different things, so I would be interested to know what people are actually paying if different to list prices. They are really cracking cars but unfortunately we have another child on the way and so want to upgrade to something bigger (and slower unfortunately). Spec below: 66 Plate 340i Touring in Estoril Blue 43,000 miles 2 previous owners (i've had the car since May 2018 and 20,000 miles) Full service history (BMW plus one German indy last time around) M Sport Plus pack including bigger blue brakes, professional nav, Harmon Kardon, privacy glass etc) Heated Front seats (black leather) Pano Sunroof and Reverse Camera 4-5mm Pilot Sport 4 all around Generally vgc all around but the only negative is whiteworm from the centre caps on the alloys so they would need a refurb to be perfect Be interested to hear what everyone thinks or any recent market intel. Cheers |

Looking on the AUC site, there are two white 340i tourings of similar age for sale. One with less miles, one slightly more. They're £24-25k with warranty and dealer facilities etc.
It's currently a good time to be a seller and an expensive time to be a buyer, so you may be able to achieve a price in that ballpark. |

Yup, no question the blue is preferable, but would depend on spec for me, as that might over rule the colour.

For reference.
I recently did a WBAC online quote. 16 plate, 340i F31. Full BMW history. 1 previous owner and 44k. They came in at £19k bang on. I paid 23k from Sytner Sheffield 2 years ago on 36k. I'm not sure if WBAC take into account any nice factory options or not.? If they just go on base spec then i'd expect more if I took it to back to BMW for a trade ini (it now has the MPPSK added and is quite a unique spec (which could work against it to be fair)).

Having been in the market for a 340i for a while I've seen the prices strengthen.
That much discussed combination of lack of used car availability, COVID halting production of new cars, people not needing cars for commuting/work so not changing them as regularly, some people having a little more disposable income as they couldn't go on holiday last year so buying cars etc. etc. The BMW dealers I've visited have all moaned that they'd usually have 70-80 AUC on the forecourt and barely have 30 at present. One well spec'd Shadow Edition 340i I saw sell in three hours. It was a BMW AUC, had Pro Nav, reversing camera, heated seats and steering wheel, high beam assist, auto folding mirrors, plus all the usual Shadow Edition elements in black with 12,000 miles, a 2018 car. As I recall it was £32,500 asking price. It will have sold for that too. BMW are holding firm as they can sell these cars three or four times over. This was a few months ago. To me that seemed a good/fair price. Similar cars are now being put up for £33-35,000 which is painful for anyone in the market. As we've seen from another forum member that recently traded in their 440i, BMW will add between £3,000 and £5,000 to the trade-in price. He chopped it in at £27,000 I think and it's up for £32,000. I was informed by someone that's close to the trade, and close enough to a BMW employee to know, that a BMW AUC will always have about £3-5,000 added to the trade in price offered. There have been the same handful of 340i's on Auto Trader for months now. Some BMW AUC don't even get the pictures added to the ad' and sell. Most of those for sale are traders that describe them badly or car supermarkets like Cazoo, who really don't know what they're selling. Of those for sale some have poor specs and are missing a lot of people's 'must haves' like BMW Professional for the Media/Nav package and they are still asking strong money i.e. £33,000 and more for '18 cars. Those that are older and have more miles soften a little, but still seem to be high 20's. You need to get to 40,000 plus miles and '16/'17 cars before touching £25-26k as far as I can see. Yours seems well spec'd and should be an LCI model at it's '16. Anyone that purchases it could also add the MPPSK exhaust and map as it doesn't have the OPF fitted. Pano roof could be a selling point for some. There is one on in black with Stebbings that's similar to yours for £26,500, but without pano roof. So perhaps try £26-27,000? Prestige Cars in Kent wanting £35,000 for the '18 Shadow Edition with 18,000 miles and a pretty poor spec (no Pro Media) are dreaming in my view. However, there is very little choice out there. |

Thanks for the responses so far, and especially Two-tone for that useful view on the market.
I forgot to mention that mine also has adaptive LED headlights which are a nice option to have, so it is well specc'ed compared to some. I might approach BMW to see what they think as a cash purchase, but I am tempted to list it privately and see where that gets me. I appreciate the number of buyers who are willing to pay £25k cash to a private seller are limited versus those who can take advantage of dealer credit options etc so i'm sure that will be a consideration. Unfortunately everything I am looking at (late Discovery 4s) seem to be going the same way so hard to know when to just bite the bullet and make the change as I think it will be some time before the market gets back to "normal"! |

Just to provide an update on this! I've listed the car on Autotrader for £26k and had an influx of trade buyers keen to snap it up to add to their inventory. As expected, they need to build in a margin so are offering in the £22 - £24k range for a hassle free sale. The garage I am purchasing from is offering a part ex not dissimilar to that so will probably go that route. Having said that, if there are any forum members after a decent 340i then happy to discuss further. Cheers

Thanks MY340i for that tip. I had a look at Cazoo and you are right - they are offering £24,375 for a "Good" condition and slightly more for excellent which is a lot more than WeBuyAnyCar. Cinch offer a similar value but only when you part ex for one of their vehicles.
Does anyone have experience with Cazoo and whether they knock you down when you actually get there? |

I sold my 440i last week to Cazoo, a quick look around the car, no haggling at all and money was in the account straight away. A very easy sale and offered more than wbac and motorway quote |

I just put my car details into Cazoo (2015 340i, 55K miles in excellent condition, FSH etc., 1 owner (me) and most options ticked) and it came out at £20,175 which is almost £3K more than a WBAC quote 2 weeks ago

John Clark Aberdeen have a March 2019 F31 340i up for £37,000 - not a huge spec either but only 7000 miles

Just to provide closure to my particular story. In the end a BMW main dealer wanted to buy it and offered slightly more than Cazoo for a trouble free sale - they are obviously very short on stock still and willing to pay over the odds! Will keep an eye out on the BMW website to see what they end up listing it for.
