Ah yes, I forgot that part. Chasing the intoxicating clatter of a unnecessarily loud 4 cylinder "[that] would be obnoxious for others, but put some joy in [their] heart."

OP forget everything I said.

It sounds like you want to get into cars (nice!), but don't have a ton of experience. Unless a part has an EO number (Dinan), modifying anything between the air filter and the catalytic converter is illegal. Period. Excessively loud exhaust tickets are happening, and a loud exhaust is a pretext to stop a car and pop the hood. I've heard that CA is starting voluntary roadside OBDII SMOG checks, these could become mandatory. Wildly illegal mods (turbo on a non-turbo car) can get your car towed and impounded. Lesser mods might require going to a ref, and I've heard that an appointment can be expensive. The bottom line is that getting caught costs money.

If you want to pass smog, expect to have to revert to stock before the check. Either you'll need to have the ability and time or the cash to pay someone. Keep in mind that costs don't end with installing parts.

I drove modded cars in the bay and never had a problem, but I keep an eye out for cops and generally don't drive like an idiot.

Why not save the cash you were going to spend on mods, and get a 335i? Then get bm3 when the 335i starts to feel slow.

Take my advice with a grain of salt and do whatever you want.
Well, I don't PLAN on getting a 328i. I just plan on getting an f30 with M sport packages. As i stated in another forum, I plan on buying the cars from an auction. They have all types of models from 328is, to 340s, to M3'S etc. Recently, I was very interested in purchasing 2017 340i because well the B58 I heard was such a great engine. I say getting a 328i because those are the most common cars to see at an auction or just in general. Insurance for My 2018 Camry is decently expensive because of my age and getting a 2018 or newer car, especially a bmw meaning a sportier car, would rise the insurance a drastic amount. I would also prefer an N55 as well mainly due to issues with N20'S/N26'S. I heard that many many models before 2016 had timing chain issues as well. Furthermore, I'm not necessarily into power currently, but If i do end up getting an inline 6, that's where power would start for me. As of now, I'm more interested in sounds and looks, and obviously tuning the car, catless dp, etc. would increase the power. If i do get a 328i, I would end up having it around 300 horsepower which is decent for me.

I must be old. I have no clue what "reffed" is.

CA has made it clear that wishes to stamp out modded vehicles as well as other freedoms. I wouldn't bother poking the bear unless I had deep pockets. It's cheaper to move to a free state, but be sure to pick one with a better water supply.

What about considering MPPSK? I did that on my 440i and i LOVE it. I would imagine that MPPSK is totally legal in Cali ? You get a mild tune and an amazing sounding exhaust with bubbles and pops and growls. It's more expensive than a third party tune, but . . at least I don't need to worry about cops and passing state inspections. Just an option
