Hik Vision and TP Link Misery

Evening

I had my cctv upgraded to 4K night vision hardwired cameras with a new DVR that would support them as the old one wouldn’t.

It’sfine as in it’ll record everything to the hard drive but the router is in my office and the DVR is in the fitted wardrobe (I have a purpose built place for it) in our bedroom, I have TP link powerline extenders to get the app to work on my phone which worked a treat until the upgrade.

The app keeps losing connection and it’s boiling my piss, broadband is 300+meg consistently, the router with the TP link is about 12 metres and one floor away from the second one which is plugged directly into the hard drive.

What is going wrong as it’s dropping off the app regularly and then needs about 20 mins of resetting and messing to get it back online.

My first thoughts are the TP links are now not up to the job?

Any ideas?

Why not sack off the powerline adapter (only ever going to be a compromise) and run in a LAN cable from the router to the NVR?

I think you’re right.

If the video from the 4K cameras isn’t significantly compressed the aggregate data being simultaneously transmitted across the network will be significant.

I installed some Powerline units in my mum’s bungalow years ago and they ended up being very unreliable. I binned them when she switched to BT Fibre Broadband which came with a fast router with much better signal strength and range.

I think you need to upgrade those access points.

I ran this config in our old house for years with no issue. Are you sure the 2 power lines are on the same electrical circuit as that could cause an issue?

Worth trying to factory restore the Powe lines and reset them up again too.

My experience has been that power line systems are highly variable. I gave up and ran a cat6 cable network and never looked back.

I use TP Link power lines and find them good.

I encounter problems with the channels they use. Have you looked at the settings (I use the TP Link app)?

Maybe try either fixing it to one channel or change the channel it is on as something else may be interfering.

Thanks chaps, I’ll try adjusting the channels first and if not look at running a cable, however that’s the a job in itself given the router is the other side of the house to the DVR

My non WiFi NVR is in the loft so I used a Netgear EX6130 WiFi extender to get a signal and plug the NVR in.
It's been working fine for over a year with 3x 5mp HiLook camera feeds.
I also have a ddns setup to avoid using the HiLook severs when connecting remotely.

I put in a TP Link Deco M5 mesh system and that works really well around the house as I used to have connection issues in various areas. My Deco M5 is a bit out of date but consider one of the newer systems to get good coverage. They have a two or three gigabit ports on each unit depending what you are willing to pay

I use a TP Link powerline extender for part of my 2K camera system and it works pretty well - it's stable, doesn't drop out and never needs to be reset. I started with a BT equivalent which didn't work at all so the TP Link replaced that. I opted for a powerline system as there was no easy way of extending the mesh system I have within the house to the garages, which are separate from the main house

In my case there is probably 60-70 metres of power cable between the two TP Link units and it is still able to stream live from the cameras. The live streaming isn't always 2K, sometimes the resolution is reduced, but the footage is stored and retrievable in 2K.

In your situation, as others have said, a good mesh system within the house should solve your problem with the side benefit of improving wifi for everything else.

This week i purchased two TP-Link powerline adapters to help with better wifi upstairs, and after a day of testing, they were useless (they were on the same circuit). I then purchased a TP-Link wifi extender instead, and now it's perfect giving me almost twice as much speed! The plug is situated upstairs and i get it all around my house with no issues. This is the one i purchased:

If you want to keep using powerline adapters, get Develo magics. They even have an option to include a wireless mesh system.
They’re not cheap, but they work no matter what your house cabling does.
I had similar issues to you OP. Honestly, they’re fantastic.
If you buy from Amazon you can try them & just return them if you’re not happy. But you will be!
