Smart / Air / Tile tag for Keys

Just got me a £25 Tile Pro to attach to keys.
Prices to copy keys vary from 150 from private hackers up to ~300 from official dealer, and that is only a copy. If losing a last key then it is a lump sum, and hassle with sending modules and that is if the car is open.
I know somebody who bought Jeep some time ago for about £4k and within few months lost his last key somewhere on construction site, he then had few locksmiths messing around with electronics changing modules and reprogramming those in an attempt to program a key, long story short he had to 'scrap' the car.

I use a combination of Tile and AirTags, depending on the item. Multiple sets of keys for the cars, wallet, laptop backpack (concealed), etc.

Tile claims it is to work with both droids and apples,
although some reviews noted a weaker signal comparing to its rivals

Can't remember where but read a review where both were tested in luggage. Both worked essentially the same but the AirTag won based on the features in the Find My app compared to the Tile app, think the map/location was better. However if you're Android then really its Tile....

All being iPhone users in the family, we’ve been using AirTags for the reasons mentioned previously. My only bugbear was that initially only a single user could be linked to an AirTag.

However, they’ve recently introduced ‘sharing’ functionality to address this, which means that our kids only have to carry 1 AirTag each (rather than 2 so that both myself & Mrs could keep tabs on them).

Are Air Tags any good for keys? I'm constantly forgetting mine as my car key is on the phone. The reason I ask is my Airpods are pretty useless in picking up they're not with me until I'm a mile down the road.

You can set the distance for the left behind feature to alert you. IIRC the minimum distance is 100m. However, you are usually always moving away from the place you left your item so when it alerts you, depending on your mode of transport, you could be quite a distance from that minimum setting.

Yeah, I've already set them to the smallest boundary distance. I end up going way beyond it before I get an alert.

Where’s that distance setting available? I can’t seem to find it.

In the app “Find My”, select the device or item you are interested in.
Under “notify when left behind, select the location and adjust the distance.

I use it mainly for a peace of mind for the event of losing them somewhere rather then forgetting. As known tags can be tracked literally anywhere away from ones location. And can be scanned if somebody picks them that should bring email / phone number - so can be returned.
'Left behind' option that you referring to is subscription based on Tile, don't know about Air Tags.

AirTags are great. Trick is to keep two in the car. One not overly hidden, say in a glovebox or seat back, but the other well hidden and with the speaker removed. Thief finds the first 'hidden' one and chucks it out thinking job done, not expecting the covert speakerless one to still be hidden in the depths of the car somewhere!

Might work for the average Ned but pro thieves don’t go scrabbling around a car to find tags. They use a Bluetooth scanner.
