Mine just did this to me, 4 days old with 200 miles on it. It is a 328xi with a production date of 2/2013. This is my first BMW, so hopefully this is an easy and quick fix. I was lucky the intersection was clear when I was unable to come to a stop.

If you haven't already, do everyone a favor and file a complaint with NHTSA. I've never done one and it's probably a PITA, but the more that do the more likely it will get addressed.

It took me under 5 minutes. Very easy

Unfortunately my car is back in the shop for the same problem again. They are once again replacing a vacuum pump and this time all new brake lines.

Do not let the dealer tell you there is nothing wrong with the car. Please report it to the NHTSA website. So far I have been through two vacuum pumps, a Check Valve and Camshaft, and it has still not solved the problem. My car has been in the shop for two months over the past 9 months and at this point I have had enough. I am not BMW's test dummy to try and figure out whats wrong with there car. This has been my 4th BMW, and probably my last. I have been waiting to see if I can get a buyback before going lemon Law on them.

Good luck, but please file a report.

Let's make this abundantly clear: BMW is not your friend. They are out to protect themselves, not you.

A vacuum pump won't fix your problem, it'll just happen again. The solution is a new camshaft, necessitating a top end rebuild of a brand new engine design. Stock of camshafts, as of June when this happened to me, is almost 0 as the engine hasn't be around long enough for them to amass a back stock of spare parts. Ordering the part will take 21-28 days to arrive from Germany to the west coast of the US.

If this happens to you, I suggest requesting your dealer start the buy back process as soon as possible. BMWNA jerked me around for 3+ weeks claiming they were going to take care of me before bold facing lying on the 29th day that the car was fixed, and then being forced to give buyback when it wasn't.

I will file a complaint with NHTSA as well.

Just out of interest:
Had any of the failing cars a manual transmission?
And why is the camshaft related to braking?

I just recently had a brake problem where dealer accused me of leaving the parking brake on causing the brake pads and rotors to shot. I hope these are not related...

Someone just posted a recall announcement for all N20/N26 engines for loss of brake power assist. Sounds pretty serious when there's a stop sale order.

My car has been at the dealer since Monday, and they said they replaced the camshaft already, but were waiting for the new vacuum pump to arrive. I am cringing at the fact that after 4 days of owning this car, the top end of the motor has to come apart already. Wondering if I should speak to the dealer about swapping for a 2014 and paying the extra per month.

Just asking cause I've always had it on and never experienced this issue thus far. I wonder if it has anything to do with it.

You need to file a report with the NHTSA about the incident and report the issue to your dealership.

I hope BMW can get the fix out before people get seriously injured.
