Car and Driver Instrument Test 335i

wtf? either they dont know how to drive or its slower...my n54 did 0-60 in under 5...

Quote:
The 335i loves being hurried down country two-lanes with a radar detector on guard, showing the same easy comfort with a quick pace as the previous model did. If the definition of good steering is that which allows the driver to place the car exactly where desired, the 335i's still got it. Its clarity is undimmed by the switch to electric assist and a new, optional variable-ratio steering gear, even if its feedback is more opaque.
Quote:
As for the numbers, the 335i proved marginally slower than expected in testing. It needed 5.3 seconds to reach 60 mph instead of something in the high fours, as we've recorded with previous 335s. Sometimes that's the driver's fault, but forensic analysis revealed that the launches came off okay. However, the car then slowed appreciably even though the shifts were clean. We even tried power-shifting (keeping the gas pedal floored during the gearchanges) a couple of times, but the numbers wouldn't budge.

A slower 5-to-60 time of 5.9 seconds-we expected mid-fives for that-also indicated that something may have been amiss. Bad gas, perhaps, or not enough break-in miles on the odometer (1365 at test time). Possibly, the new 19-inch rims and correspondingly heavier tires may have helped act as anchors. The 3's other anchors, the brakes, did their duty to perfection, pulling several stops between 162 and 170 feet and never failing to offer a firm pedal in any situation.

The upshot is that the 3-series marches on with improvements that mostly require engineering drawings to ascertain. This is either good news if you passionately adored the previous model or bad tidings if you were hoping for more newness. At some point, BMW will have to take a bigger step to move forward or risk falling behind its competitors-but not just yet.
Very nice

Not that 0 to 60 means everything but 5.3 seconds for the 335 is pretty slow. Car and Driver did 0 to 60 in my 2008 335xi in 4.7 seconds.

Doesn't the new 328i do 0 to 60 in 5.7 to 5.8 seconds with much better gas mileage? Why would anyone bother with the 335i?

yea kinda disappointed on the data, even braking is not as good, e90 328i can do better then 169 feet from 70mph....

hopefully in BMW's tradition, first and second year owner always got screwed over better engine and equipment. i still remember those black bumper with no paint in the early days

Hopefully some other magazines will get a different car and provide some more test data.

that's my thought. i bet the lci f30 has a nice power bump, led taillights, plus slightly redesigned front fascia. i'm holding out for that

Why? It's weird but if you spec the 328i with everything that comes standard with the 335i, you're only 2-3K off the 335i price. For that much, you might as well upgrade.

Well that's the point it comes with more standard features. So it's a good value. If you don't want the standard features that's another story. Personally I think the 335i standard options over the 328 are must-haves.

indeed, Car and driver tent to have better testing result compares to other car magazines. old e46/e90 330i can do 0-60 5.7 already, I hope there will be a M Performance model 3 series with higher output engine soon.

Wait, 0-60 in 5.4?

Hey guys,

This topic may have already been beaten to death but I'm in the market over the next few months (must purchase in June) and wanted a 2012 335 till I saw the shocking lack of discrepancy between its 0-60 and the 328.

Even Car and Driver found the 335 to only be 5.3?! Really?

Do we have new numbers in? Otherwise, I'm getting the feeling I may shell out for a TT or just settle for a 328 instead.

Wait till other mags publish numbers... It wont be faster than an N54 e90, but it shouldn't be slower than an N55 e90.

Are you going to race against someone?

Just get a 328i.

This is what I found in another thread:
http://www.f30post.com/forums/showth...1#post11282893

Quote:
It shows. The new 328i four-cylinder is actually one second faster to 100 kilometres an hour than the previous 328i six. Most noticeable is the surfeit of low-end power, the combination of the turbo four’s abundant torque and the new eight-speed automatic transmission making the new 328i feel much more robust. Launch is forceful (BMW Canada claims a creditable 6.3 seconds to 100 km/h) and, when passing on the highway, the 2.0L feels twice as large. No need for high revs or gnashing of valves, the 328i scoots past traffic with ease. And did I mention that Transport Canada rates the new 328 at 6.8 L/100 km overall, a 22% improvement over the outgoing model?

On the other hand (and did I not promise a whole passel of “buts”), the four does not feel as smooth or as sporty as the replaced in-line six. It’s difficult to express with words the concept of a faster car being less sporty, but BMW in-line sixes are happy little engines, just bursting with eagerness to rev their hearts out. Meanwhile, the new four, while displaying some enthusiasm for the entire process, is never quite as happy. Nor does it sound as good. That’s not so much a condemnation of the new N20 engine as reiterating that BMW’s in-line six is still one of the sweetest-sounding engines in the biz.
Take your pick.

0-60mph in 5.4s manual/auto is what BMW says in their North American specs.

Car & Driver got 4.9s for the 2009 335i sedan manual, and 5.3s for the 2012 335i sedan manual.

"As for the numbers, the 335i proved marginally slower than expected in testing. It needed 5.3 seconds to reach 60 mph instead of something in the high fours, as we’ve recorded with previous 335s."
