328 Brakes sportline
So my car is about 3 weeks old now and i am convinced there is something wrong with my brakes. They fucking suck.
I have to press the pedal way to far in for them to really grab, and even then it just feels like mush. Perfect example is i am driving somewhat aggressivley, and i need to stop at a red light, i hit the brake pedal and it just doesnt stop like one would expect it to, i am having to roll into intersections almost. Even my 3 other e90 328s have much better braking that the F30. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? How do you F30 brakes compare to your E90(specifically the 328). I will be taking it in this week and have a talk with the shop forman, i will request new brakes on all wheels, new rotors, new pads, everything, I have owned 10+ bmws and the brakes were never this bad. The braking feels like a frickin corolla brakes.

Are they overheating thus fading or is it just the long pedal travel you dont like ?
Is ABS engaging when you brake hard ? Did you drive any other 328i before or since to compare ?

I havent braked it hard enough to activate ABS yet, (i dont think) Have not driven another F30 328(i will when i take my car in) I have little confidence in the brakes which is a problem, especially on a sportline bmw. I am going to have them replace all the brakes, do the lines, try to adjust the pedal travel. Just not what i expect from a BMW, my e90 328 brakes are much much better than these. I really hope there is some way they can improve this when i take the car in. And does anyone have any info on the regenerative braking?

The regenerative system should have no effect on your braking feel. It charges teh battery via the alternator when you brake or coast.
If its just the pedal travel there is not much they can do. They will only replace parts if they are defective. You would know if you activate ABS, it pulses the brake pedal quite hard.

How many miles do you have on the car ?
It takes a couple hundred to bed the brakes in

Normally i can be doing 40 or 50 and late brake coming to a light and not have an issue stopping at the light, now same scenario, i have to put my foot to the floor and even then it just doesnt feel like the car will stop in time so i have to roll through the intersection. I dont want to floor the brake becuase that cant be good for the car and i would have to do it everytime im drivin aggressivley and need to stop quick. Will take it in the week, talk with the forman, who i know, and drive another f30 328

One of the 1Addicts members made a web page and video about bedding in your brakes
Have a look, it may help http://www.essexparts.com/learning-center/Bed-in

One doesnt have to go quite as aggressive as they do for a street car. But a bed in session does improve braking a lot on new rotors and pads

justinnum1,
Sorry to read about your annoyance and disappointment. I cannot just yet compare brakes but all I can state is that my E90 brakes are nothing less than superb. Perfect pedal travel, tight grip and very short stopping distance if need be. I had the brakes bled some months ago and it substantially improved pedal/brake performance. Perhaps that's all you need. Yes, get your dealer to fix it. Pedal travel and feel should be an instinctive feeling. Your instincts are probably spot on.

I had a longer/better test drive in a 328i sportline and the brakes were fine there too. Not quite as good as my GTI's which I personally installed Hawk performance street pads, DOT 5 fluid and then bled myself just 3 months ago (I'll never shy away from doing that now that I have a Motive bleeder and know what I'm doing). But they really were up to aggressive street driving without question - good feel & initial bite and I didn't consider them mushy at all which is something that a couple of reviews whined about. So yea - get them looked at.

That said, you have experience with BMW brakes. If you have to give more pedal travel to get harder breaking, once initial bite has happened, then it could be due to air in the brake line. Air compresses, brake fluid doesn't. So, if there is air you will get brake pedal travel to get more braking force. Having a long-ish brake travel before the brakes bite, would suck on it's own, especially since BMW usually does a great job with short brake travel. But, once the brakes bit, stopping force should be more about pedal pressures not so much travel. Here's hoping that there's air in there, and that it's not how crappy these new brakes really are. I know that doesn't sound good to hope for air in the brakes, but I think you know what I mean. |

Good luck demanding they replace all rotors and brake pads.
I bet they give them a glance over and say "they're working according to specification" but they'd be willing to bleed/flush the lines as a goodwill gesture. |
