Swirls on my trunk Lid
So my worst nightmare came true today when a cleaner put a box on my trunk , resulted in swirls on the trunk door. i have Sonar perfect finish 4/6, will it remove the swirls if applied by hand and microfiber pad or i need to do it with DA or orbiter?
thanks for the advise. Last edited by messiry; 10-21-2014 at 12:44 PM.. |

Those arent swirls, they are straight up nasty scratches.
The Sonax may indeed work just fine to remove them, but I dont feel you will get the quality results you want using it by hand. I personally would never use any polish product by hand. A DA & likely an orange pad would indeed get them out, but before going the machine route try using a wax (not a polish) by hand. You cant mess anything up that way and its the least aggressive approach. I bet a lot of the scratches would be removed that way. Afterwards if its still bad use the DA to finish the job.

those aren't swirl marks, it's scratches. I would guess you need to use a machine to take that out.

so i guess i am going to wash the car first, mask that area and use clay bar, then work that area with sonax perfect finish - now i have meguiars power DA with different pads, i guess better to start with less aggressive pad (yellow pad) and see the results, if still need more then i will go more aggressive pad (red pad), sounds good enough?
now after sonax perfect finish do i still need a Polish? |

Sonax Perfect Finish is a polish and does not contain any wax.
It will look good but wont be protected. Depending on the condition of the rest of the trunk you might want to hit the whole thing with the yellow pad, to avoid a highly polished spot sticking out in the middle of the trunk. The repair will blend better with the rest of the trunk that way. But regardless if you do that or not, you will need to apply a wax or sealant (or both [sealant first]) to the entire trunk for the best looking results and proper protection. You can apply the wax with a white pad if you have one otherwise you can do it by hand with a quality applicator.

Good point Alan, actually my paint is in perfect condition, my car is just 3 months old and i have detailed the car after getting it from the dealer, anyway i think its better to do whole ting.
so i am planning to follow Sonax with CG black light, then jet seal, finally P21s carnauba wax. now the question will be how long i need to leave the paint after each stage, i.e. between the sonax and CG black light, then Jet Seal, finally the P21s wax. |

Looking at those products, none of which Ive used, I would use them in this order based on their product descriptions:
Sonax Jet Seal Black Light Carnauba But honestly I would probably skip the carnauba all together. The great benefit of carnauba is the deep shine you get from it, and depending on whos formulation you use, the durability as well. Using a sealant instead of a wax is fine since sealants often provide better durability than waxes. Waxes often add that extra level of gloss you dont get from a sealant. But the Black Light really reads like a last step product whos main focus is indeed the gloss factor, but it also claims to have sealant properties. With that said I would wait 12-24 hours between the 2 sealants. Use the sonax, wipe the car down and apply the Jet Seal. Then wait the 12-24hrs and apply the Black Light. Give it a good look the next day and if youre satisfied youre done. Otherwise feel free to top with the P21, but I would do a test spot and perform a before and after before doing the whole car. You may find the Black Light gives a better gloss for your color.

I have had really good luck getting swirls and minor scratches out with Meguiars 105 and a surbuf pad. only a couple times did i have to use some 205 to make it perfect. 105 finishes down quite well for how aggressive it can be.
