Just wondering if anyone has had an issue with their chains if BMW replaced the chain in 2015?

Checking in on this a year later. I have a mid year 2015 with N20. It's supposed to have the new TC plastic design. Am I out of the woods or the TC guide is still considered a maintenance item? Thanks

Dont know if these timing chain concerns have killed the value of these cars but no way am I getting rid of this car for such a low quote.

I mean, I LOVE my car. Exterior and interior are perfect, exactly what i want (m-sport black with red interior). I just would rather have a) a motor that doesnt sound like a TDI and b) a stick.

But looks like if i dont want to burn a pile of money, i need to hold on to this car long term. Modding more when warranty is up. But yes, I do want to get the updated timing chain installed to avoid that headache down the line.

Bought the car with 45k used the LM flush and Ceratec, I'm on my second bottle of CeraTec and at 80k miles now on my 2013 328i and have never had a leak anywhere. Engine is dead quiet at idle and doesn't consume oil.
Do my own work on my car, change the oil at work on a lift, inspect underneath and everything is always spotless.
I also have a 2013 328i. My engine sounds like a diesel at idle. Was always told and form doing research it was from the direct injection used on the n20 motor. Is there something I can do to make i quiet? I’ll try anything! It’s embarrassing when this thing is idling

I assume I am not the only one on here who at least contemplated getting this done, it would be super useful for us all to have an average cost so we have a good idea of what to budget. From my recollection people have been paying between 2 and 3 grand for the job, wondering if that is accurate. Appreciate the input.

Same sounding diesel as well, i wish it was quieter 🤫

I just wanted to pop back in here and make sure everybody knew about FCP's new 2 part timing chain DIY. It is the only DIY that I know of on this job and they really did put a lot of effort into capturing the details. Hope someone finds it helpful!

My indy shop quoted me just at $3000 for the full 9 yards..... New Timing Chain kit, Oil Pump chain kit, Oil pan/gasket, Valve cover gasket, fresh coil packs, and plugs. I will probably have them do the trans service and OFHG as well...so looking at close to 4k to make it new again hahahaha

Great deal. Just don't know if it's worth it or if that 3k should go towards a newer 3series....decisions, decisions....

Not to be negative but this thread is kinda turning into the other dozen we have on this subject. reasons WHY we think it happens...peoples experience getting it repair via dealership, etc. Would really like to start seeing some costs and shops around the US that have successfully done this before any issues come up and simply because the owner wanted to nip it in the butt before hand.
no kidding bud, just posted cost of repair here in south texas !

Went to 3 shops here in SoCal and first shop that is BMW "certified" quoted $3000 for timing chain kit and oil pump guide/chain, second shop repairs a lot of european cars including Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, BMW...quoted me $1500 for the kit then the last shop I went to also does European cars quoted me $1600 which includes the kit, oil pump guide/chain kit AND the crank sprocket(the owner seemed to have worked on these numerous times, also stated that if the Vanos are bad, it's additional $600). For those who have the N26, we are covered with the SULEV warranty which covers the VANOS.

Man speaking of this dreaded TC issues, well i had my Indy look and hear and he confirmed it was going on me, i asked him about the whinning noise's as i don't have that nearly as loud. He said just listen closely and u can hear the slapping sounds its making, disregard the regular diesel/ticking noises. The whinning he says is the turbo, but mine is a faint whine.

He said its better to just get a brand new engine , parts+labor incl for: $6k

But now since its not destroyed yet, i will be departing her very shortly, gonna sell it to Carvana, KBB has her at: $11k for Trade In Value..

The cost of the kit at FCP is back down to $615. I recall it being $7xx two weeks ago... I might pull the trigger on buying the kit in addition to the crank hub washer and the three timing chain guide bolts that are not in the kit. Returns good for 90 days so that's third week of Nov, two weeks past the date I would get the work done if the recall doesn't go through.

Funny i went to my local shop for my wife's Corolla, they were replacing her front struts and they had a customer Audi A6 and the engine sounded exactly like our's except maybe just a tad bit quieter, lol..

I had my car done here in Italy since I'm stationed here, I payed $1500 and they used the same parts on the list above, the chain is single pieces like in the pictures posted, the car feels faster but diesel engine sounds still almost the same. I didn;t have any issues before besides asking for more oil once in the past 5 years. I hope I don't even have any issues cause the car is amazing otherwise.
