I was 'this close' to getting one but when I saw the 335 I just couldn't resist the better fuel economy, tyre wear and ride comfort. One day maybe...

That's just it, when I worked out what it would cost me on a monthly basis, tyres, road tax, insurance, fuel (180 miles per tank ), cost of car (with extras) etc it came out around £1200 a month. Couldn't justify it. In comparison the 335d is somewhere around £700 ish.

Are the cheap deals on the new c63 or old stock of the good looking one?

We spend £600 per month on average between the two cars we have, but that includes driving holidays across Europe, and about 45000 miles per year altogether!

Still, it's a crazy amount of money really!

Indeed why not! The way I see it, cars are my interest as well as a means of transportation, and given how much time we spend in them for getting to work each day, visiting our families and friends, and going on holiday, then might as well have a nice car to do it in and enjoy it all as much as possible.

Life is for living, and for me that means cars! Shallow and sad as that may be... I don't really care!

It's all relative, my mate has a rather large cruiser and burns more in a weekend than I do in a month. To him it's within his budget, he still has no dress sense though

My cunning plan is to go for a 3-4 year old M3 towards the end of the year or early next year.... I'm hoping that the launch of the new one shortly will mean quite a few will be traded in and slightly depress the values from where they are now.

The C63 has to be the best sounding "relatively affordable" car on the road, but i've wanted a proper M car since I saw my first E30 M3 about 30 years ago!

I just hate sitting inside c63. Interior cannot match exterior.

I was in the c63 v 335d xdrive camp about a month ago, agree the cockpit in Merc's is not great, the sound of c63 is the best but in the end opted for 335d xDrive, also c63 200miles per tank if you drive sensible not fun!

hehe it's bound to happen. I'd be making sure it had a BMW extended warranty though. If I had to pick, I'd probably opt for the C63 (pre-2014) purely for the sound.

Yup, and that's if you don't drive it hard. There was a guy on MBClubUK who got just 125 miles out of a full tank... 125

Is the M3 any more likely to break something significant than any other modern car? I'm really not sure I would want any of my current cars out of warranty!

I think the old fashioned auto would put me off. I'm already finding the Z4 box a little on the slow side now compared to the 8speed one in the 335d. I never did before! So the M DCT would be a big attraction. Also, the OH knows how to use the Pro Nav system in a BMW so she would prefer both cars to be BMWs!

I would imagine most M3s get driven very hard, I would. It's bound to put more stress on all components. The suspension on my E91 was knocking after just 1.5 years. Could never get BMW to do anything about it. I'll bet some poor sod had to fork out for that. My 540i was a bloody money pit. Every time I went out in it it seemed to cost me a grand Radiator blew, suspension failed, cats went....etc. Never again would I own a BMW outside of warranty, let alone an M3. It's just sods law that things always start to fail when you're on the wrong side of the warranty period.

I know this is a long thread and I haven't read it in totality so this post may be out of place but...

Just got my new toy, a Linear PCM Recorder, so decided to record the car today - inside, at the speaker - to start research on the potential for piped sound. Like others I have a suspicion there 'may' me something gin the rumours depute others not finding the hardware.

Check out my recording on the link below - let me know what you think. This is a far superior sound recording to the iPhone attempt to capture the exhaust note (that the first sound file on the linked page). I may do some more 'research' and record other sounds if anyone is interested

Hmmmm. I've just listened to your links and if that is a diesel then I'm from mars. I can see why people say it "sounds like a V8"..because that is not the sound of a diesel engine, and if that isn't piped in I'll eat my hat.

Because I can I made a quick back to back comparison of the M135i Active Sound with the 335D recording from Mark (Uncanny eh?):

Sorry, that's my point but I can see why you thought I was disagreeing... But I totally agree that I doubt I'd have any modern car that was still worth a good chunk of money without it being covered by a decent warranty.
