Tempted -> 340i Touring

Hey all,

I currently have an F31 330DX which is the non LCI version, 13 plate. I absolutely love the car, including the look and practicality. Although, being a previous 'hot hatch' owner I really miss the sound of a petrol engine and exhaust note.

To this I've decided, sod it. I'm just going to bite the bullet sooner or later on a 340i Touring otherwise it'll forever be an itch I never scratched.

Can anyone advise on any problems if any they suffer? Is the engine good for quite a few miles? (Not that I do loads but I'd be looking to keep it).

Any current owners give their verdict or whether you are happy or wished you hadn't?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking to rush into it but with the new shape coming not too far away, there may be a few coming onto the market.

Thanks

I picked up a new 440i GC in March after handing back my 420d company car.

It’s a completely different car with the 40i engine, so smooth and effortlessly quick when you want to press on.

Mine has just ticked over 2600 miles and the engine keeps getting better as it loosens up. The exhaust sounds nice too, not loud but a nice roar when you put your foot down.

I’m not aware of any major problems but somebody else may be along soon to say otherwise.

I say go for it and enjoy the petrol straight six whilst you still can!

I came from a E91 335D, had it 4 years and like you, started to miss the exhaust note.

My 335d was high spec and over the years' id fitted billys, intercooler, meth, was running 400bhp and 630ftlbs. Loved the car but at 115k it bugged me, i don't like cars over 100k but this one had been flawless id kept it.

So i bit the bullet and started looking for f31 340i, 3 months ago i flew down to London and picked one up.

First impressions - very nice, mine has a decent spec so its a nice a place as ever to be.

What i like, the 8 speed ZF box, its a joy to use, really makes about 40% of the car tbh, looks, its a lovely looking car im, and its new, so everything is nice and tight

What i dont like - steering, because its electrical, i dont know why i just never have liked electric steering.

What i don't like (because iv came from a modded 335d) - Suspension is soft, the car dives about which i don't like, doesn't really roll much, but under heavy braking it really sits on its noise which is a bit meh, iv bought billys to put on this one so guess it will sort that out.
Slow- sounds nuts for a 340i, but it doesn't feel 350bhp, the lack of torque compared to the 335d is noticeable, its taken a bit to adjust to, using the gearbox rather than the engines sheer torque to move about.

Mileage wise, my 335d got 47mpg on a 60 mile run from dundee to abz, same run the 340i got 44mpg.... says alot for the 8 speed box and new car efficiency, round town its went from 28mpg to 22mpg

As for reliability, look after it and im sure your be fairly issue free, there is a few guys on here that have went from a f3x 335d to f3x 340i so im sure they will be along with their inputs.

Do it.
I bought one without test driving a d it was amazing, simple tweaks as well make a big difference.

Exhaust flap mod gives more growl and noise, plus the y get louder and faster as miles go.

Tuning box means approx 400bhp and 400ft lb torque and then they fly. 330d has similar torque but obviously over a very short rpm, a tuned 340 has it from approx 1.5k revs through to 5k ish!

Reving the engine through to 6.5k in 2nd/3rd is very smile enjucing.

Best do it now before any interesting engines become a thing of the past.

It's a great car. My 340i Touring is a family car that still keeps me entertained.

The outgoing model seems a real bargain against the expected prices of the soon to be M340i Touring.

No issues with my 340i Touring. It's done 23k now and still improving.

My car is an unmodified family car and without the later PPF. Sound is good for me in both modes. But, discrete enough for a shift worker in comfort mode. Sport is still interesting with the stock exhaust.

Stock exhaust on a non-PPF car get single pipe soot up if you use comfort mode mostly. As above, I need the quite mode so can't do the flap mod.

Garage List
Had my 340i for 3½ years now and it's been an absolute peach - effortless progress, great soundtrack and decent mpg (not that I care too much on that score).
