Custom Tuners

Does anyone know any good B58 tuners in the Socal area? Preferably in the LA area. Been wanting to get a good custom tune.

I can list you some good tuners that have shown great results on the FB page and here.

My list would be: Doug Newton (subpartuning), Sameh Yehia, OdinTuned, Wedge Performance, MarinTuned, TunedbyShoup, and Kagantuned

these are my personal opinion

You don't need a local tuner. Either street tune with logs or find a local Dyno and it can all be done remotely. To add a few to the list...Mike Botti, the OG BMW guys; Paul Johnson & Cary Jordan. You're splitting hairs at the end of the day. I'm leaning toward Botti or Shoup for my next tune with the Pure 800 cast.

I had an excellent experience with Cary, and we offer his maps to our customers.
I don't know Paul, but I heard good things.

Please share why you cant recommend them.

We have had great experiences with Paul. He tuned our x3 b58 with upgraded turbo and fuel pump. Ran excellent.

Recently Jordan made a claim about getting a STOCK FUELING SYSTEM M340i beyond E50 (I think it was E60 or E70) making 540whp/590wtq but the dyno graph was not measured in wheel horsepower but crank horse power yet Jordan claimed it was wheel horsepower not crank horsepower.

As for Paul, I have logs from him when I bought a stage 2 map from him and they are atrocious compared to my logs from Doug Newton. There is also a user here by the name of talentdone who went with Paul Johnson and only made 550whp and 660 WHEEL TORQUE on Vargas GC + Dorch S2! Those types of torque numbers on stock motor/trans is INSANITY! Never in my life have I seen an experienced B58 owner ask a tuner to specifically tune for more torque than horsepower when pushing the 500-600whp/wtq range.

Here is why I cant recommend Cary. At the time I was his customer who knew nothing about data logging and I was told that my map was done. Here is an image of the datalog. I have since become pretty good at reading logs and realized this was unacceptable. As a customer who has no idea how to read logs or know what is safe I shouldn't be getting told that I'm "all dialed in" with that map.

Meanwhile I have began tuning my own car using BM3 (Braun Perf) and the 2nd screenshot shows my results on the same gas.

The 3rd screenshot was Paul's tune after 10 revisions.

That's surprising, the datalogs do not look good at all.

Yup thats the scary thing these tuners tell you youre "all good to go" and "dialed in" yet there are more than -3 timing corrections, boost is all over the place, AFRs as well, etc

Very noob question here, I don't know much about tuning. What exactly is bad with these numbers. Would this cause engine failure or blown turbo?

Have you checked coils, plugs, boost leak, o2 sensors? Most of the times people blame the tuner but don’t check the condition of their car.

When I was on F80paul I had recently changed my plugs (car was a business lease from prior owner so nothing needed to be changed from factory @ 27k miles, changed plugs at 35k miles with ngk 92401s) and still got shitty timing corrections and everything was all over the place. After getting the TU pump, I switched to stage 2+ E30 after and noticed the benefits + cleaner logs for an OTS map. Come now I have the DAW v2.5 and my logs look great for what my fueling can do on a hybrid.

Consistent timing corrections across the whole rpm range during a data log on all cylinders especially corrections over -3 degrees i.e. -5 deg are not good. Occasional timing corrections above -3 degrees on one or two cylinders can be considered okay. The images show that there are corrections on all cylinders over the whole rpm range meaning the tune is too aggressive for the octane.

My Cast 800 is going in Mid Nov. Between Cary Jordan and Doug right now. One thing I can say right off the top is Doug is way more reasonable when it comes to pricing. Just still deciding considering cary has a 19 years of experience whereas Doug just seems like the expert right now. Both seem good

For me inquiring about purchasing a custom tune, yes I used email to contact him. I used paypal to send him the cash.

It went with me providing my setup and my fueling setup along with the goals that I want.

Got sent pricing for base map + additional map + information on reaching my goals and when my turbo will really wake up (as I am TU pump the car is fuel/boost limited atm)

He then asked what software I am running and the method I preferred to pay to get the ball rolling and ever since hes been great. Currently running 20-21psi with 15 degree timing
