Poor quality OE rotors?

Was having the wheels/tires rotated & balanced today at a tire place and the service tech asked me to come and look at the car, I am thinking there is something wrong with the tires, then I see this......wtf? F30 2014 ~27.5K miles passenger side is not as bad.

[IMG][/IMG]

I have an appointment with BMW service to have this fixed already, hopefully under warranty.

Nothing like this has happened to my 06 VW with 250+K miles

anyone else have this or similar happen?

The maintenance plan replaced them at 30k

Good God! Did you park your car on the beach? Looks like the salt have eaten into the rotors. Are there any meat left on the pads?
I have around 20k mileage on mine and the OEM rotors are still good (no visible rust).

That's what I was wondering? Fall off the boat on the way to delivery?

I've NEVER seen that on any vehicle I owned.

Never seen that before. There are serious multiple issues going on there. The excessive corrosion is just one issue, but those pads are not doing shit, the FULL rotor from the hat to the lip should be highly polished. Normal rust would be on the hat and the lip/edge of the rotor only. That even the pad retaining clip is rusted is currently blowing my mind.

Your location is reported at CA, MI. This a Michigan car? driven on salted roads in the winter? Do you ever wash it in the winter to get the road salt off? Driven in shitty weather then left parked for long periods of time?

Was your car on the recall list that was exposed to seawater?

How do you NOT have squeaking/squealing/grinding brakes to alert you??? I'd think the iDrive would have been triggered or something.

This is awful and weird.......

This is not because of a bad quality rotor, but because the caliper and or the brake pads are blocked mostly because of bad (non) brake maintenance.
- the piston in the caliper could be blocked (rust because of old brake fluid or broken dust membrane??)
- the caliper housing and the brake pads are blocked and can not float free

This is a typical one piston floating caliper brake problem. You need to make sure your brake gets properly maintenanced as recommended by BMW to avoid such problem.

However, should not be a problem after two years. But depending on circumstances the caliper can block sooner as expected. Hope you get it fixed under warranty!

Car is in MI, washed every week or sometimes twice depending on how bad the weather is...

Not on recall list per dealer check.

no squeaking/squealing, just shudder on moderate brake application, no warnings in the iDrive. all green across the board.

2yrs & ~27.5K miles "bad (non) brake maintenance"? , I am not sure what you mean... how do you do it? While under warranty I take it to the dealer, when the vehicle warns me or I notice unusual behavior.

Fake Chinese 3 series
not according to the door jamb sticker or the dealer service manager.

...anyway, got it back a day or so ago everything replaced under factory warranty, front & back rotors, pads etc.
I did follow one of the readily available internet bedding procedures for the brakes, smooth as silk now during brake operation.
The service manager was totally nonchalant, nothing new to him, even though the other SA was quite disturbed by these.

As I worte, not normal for a two year old...
I'm not quite sure, but I think every two years the brake should be serviced:
- dismounting pads
- cleaning all brake caliper and verify that caliper piston goes back smooth
- put copper paste on contact interfaces pad/caliper

Ask your dealer how often they should service it like this. Or have a look at the car documentation. Think should be in there as well. (As Oil change intervals and so on.)

There is nothing abnormal in that photo. The hat and the hub have some surface rust, but the rotor face is clear as one would expect from working brakes.

The OPs situation is totally abnormal I can only guess is from heavy exposure to road salt and parking for extended periods of time.
