In my opinion don't spend the money, my reasoning:

I have a 36 month lease.......

Pirelli's come with a manufactures 1 Year full road hazard replacement, then something like 60 % for the second year and 40% for the 3rd year

I have had to replace 1 rim in the last 15 years of driving (pot hole)

BMW does not cover cosmetic damage

Had a flat (nail) after 6 weeks, total cost for new tire was $65 for install, so I figure I'm still $1400 ahead in my pocket

lastly, I rather spend $800 for a brand new set of tires 24 months into the lease so that I know that I'm driving on good tires through the entire 36 months, instead of worrying if I drive on the originals for the full 36 months will the dealer say they are not within the return guidelines and want to charge me $1800 at the lease termination

For about twice the price of insurance I can get a BRAND NEW set of OEM take-offs here on the board.

Have spare wheels and tires on hand or sell what I don't need.

This won't be our only car, we always have other cars in a pinch.

You can take the middle ground and spend $100 or so on road hazard certs at America's Tire.

Tires on a lease need to come back with 4mm life. The charge is $200 per tire. Worst case scenario your looking at $800, don't know where you got $1,800.

I didnt get the tire warranty and i totally regret it. Ive driven plenty of cars with low profile tires...in horrible NYC roads and NEVER had an issue...so i said "what could go wrong?"

3 tires later....i realize run flat tires are weak as hell

Only the original tire that came with the car is replaced in the first year by the manufacturer.

After having had six tires replaced under tire and wheel I am very happy I got it. I think each front tire got replaced at least twice and one back tire got replaced once. Unlike the Bridgestone warranty tread wear is not even considered.

All I know is I have recovered the cost of my tire and wheel insurance. Anything else from here on is pure PnL

How does BMW's tire/wheel insurance or America Tire's program work, if you decide to ditch the whole set of wheels and tires and decide to get performance tires and different wheels? Would anything still be covered?

That's great for you, but I had to replace 2 rims, and repair them 5 times, and 3 tires in 5 years with one vehicle.

It all depends on what's important to you. I have 2 sets of rims for my vehicle, and the 1 policy covers me for 8 wheels. If you live in an area with potholes, it generally pays for itself

I have the BMW 361 style wheels and just had 2 of them replaced. At first I wasnt sure that I made the right choice by getting the warranty but now I sure am glad I did. Between those and I tire I got replaced earlier, I think the warranty has paid for itself. I guess if you have bad luck, it can be worth it.

It covers all OEM approved tires and wheels

It's a classic case of YMMV, My X5 is not covered since after 3 years with my '11 nothing ever happened and I wasted $1200 on the insurance for that car. When I got my 13 X5 I declined the coverage, this is because it has huge sidewalls not prone to road hazards except nails.

I refused to drive off the lot in my 14 F30 until my tire and wheel had been sorted out when BMW replaced my 13 with my 14. With 19" low profile tires it will be financial suicide to not get some sort of coverage. 6 tires at 380 each is almost 2400, that takes care of my current policy and the money I lost on my 2011 X5 policy

I disagree, it's completely worth it for me. I'm not sure where you got that price though. I guess that's the MSRP for it. I got mine for around $900 since that is also negotiable.

Five months later I ran over a screw and had to get a new tire. It hasn't paid for itself quite yet but since the area is covered in potholes, I figure better safe than sorry.

Although I've only replaced a single tire, it would've cost me around $450 out of pocket so I'm halfway there.

Couldn't agree more with OP. You can get tire protection/road hazard warranties from every discount tire store in the US for around $60. I have done this on several previous cars. You have a blowout, get a nail, whatever, you go to Discount Tire and buy a tire and pay $60 extra for the warranty and that covers unlimited free replacement of any other tires in the future, free balancing, mounting, rotation, etc. Did this on my last car which had Conti DWS on them, soft sidewalls which had 2 blowouts and 2 bubbles. I got 4 new tires in 2 years for $60. Bought the set brand new for $800 and for an extra $60, I was covered.

Beyond that, it is just another overpriced extended warranty that they try to sell you when you are signing on the dotted line in the finance department, taking delivery of your car. It is simply a way to guarantee that you will pay for something that most likely won't happen. They don't cover cosmetic damage but if you bend a rim in a pothole, they'll replace the wheel. I have been driving in pothole ridden L.A. for almost two decades and have never bent or cracked a rim - and I have hit some serious, serious potholes. I don't drive over curbs or things like that either so honestly, It's a waste of money IMO, but it makes people feel better I guess. I don't understand how so many guys are destroying the wheels on their cars.

It's like people who buy a brand new car and then pay $3000 on top of that for some platinum extended warranty, seemingly forgetting that (A) this thing they just paid for doesn't even take effect for 3-5 years once all the factory coverage runs out and that (B) they have multiple options throughout ownership of the car to buy warranties like this. But instead they buy it the day they buy their car and most likely roll it into the monthly payment.

Insurance is for things that would be financially devastating if you had to replace them out-of-pocket. A house, a car, a heart.

Insurance premium is calculated so the average policy holder pays more into the system than they get out. Why do you think banks and insurance companies have the biggest buildings in most cities and put their name on lots of sports arenas? They're insanely profitable.

If it wouldn't kill your finances to replace a tire, don't insure it. The odds are in your favor.

3 tires and 4 wheels (19") later, the $780 I paid was well worth it...I also never had to replace wheels in my 20yrs of driving until my previous car with 19s....I wanted the insurance this time and negotiated a great price. I think the wheels are getting thinner/softer and bend/break easier than they used to. It also depends on your roads - here in Houston they are terrible - potholes, huge expansion joints, rebar sticking up, etc...it's an obstacle course

You misunderstood. My original tires wore out so when I bought new ones I also got the protection plan for 60 bucks. Got a handful of free tire replacements out of it. If you have one blowout and you buy a replacement tire from America's Tire or wherever, when you buy the road hazard warranty for that tire it extends to your other tires so that all are eligible for free replacement. Unless you are prone do destroying the wheels on your car (they're not called Rims guys), this tire/wheel protection plan is a rip.

So you still had to pay 460 to get your insurance. 400 to replace the blown out tire that wasn't insured. And 60 to cover the rest of the tires.

I now follow what you are saying but look at it this way.

Our difference is now about 700. However in your case your wheels are not covered.

In any event my policy has paid out twice as much as what I put in. That peace of mind is priceless in my view.

I wouldn't either, especially because my wheels are machined-face (style 397, more & more BMW wheels are machined) and really can't be repaired by conventional methods used by the dealer contractors.

I buy my tires at Costco. Any tires they sell automatically have free lifetime road hazard. Plus their prices are very low.

Got a nail in my tire twice since ownership of the car. 20 dollars the first time to fix and 10 dollars the second time. 30 dollars is still hell of a lot less than the 700 or 800 dollars they were asking for. I also may be lucky in that i had never had to change a rim on any of my 4 cars for the last 15 years of driving. Sure ive had to get new tires for my worn out ones or fix a leak here and there. How hard are you guys driving ?? When i see a pot hole i usually slow down enough to take it gently or avoid it altogether.
