Rear differential leak
Wife noticed new oil drops in driveway, seems my F36 rear diff is leaking from both side seals. My indy mechanic said that there has been several lately. So check yours before any damage is done because of low oil.

By the way I went to the indy this morning to top the oil, they suspect that the breather at the top of the diff would be clogged or frozen and that would cause the leak from the seals when the temperature inside the diff rises. Seals will be replaced anyway. |

While we're on the topic, I'm gathering materials to do a fluid change on the rear differential. Having some difficulty getting definitive results about the proper oil to use.
I have a 2013 335i RWD standard open diff. Newtis says this: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...lid/1VnczONFlo If I'm reading the table right, it says to use Hypoid Axle Oil G3 (Fuchs Titan EG 4218), but I've read of people using other brands of 75w90 gear oil for this service (Redline, Castrol, Lucas, Royal Purple, etc.) Wondering if using this would be alright: Liqui Moly (2048) SAE 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil - 1 Liter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055HS24O..._EgvbCbX0V1G8T What risks are there of not using the exact OEM fluid on an open diff? I get that LSDs would probably need a pretty specific fluid, but alas, I'm not so fortunate to have an LSD. Any insight/expertise would be appreciated! Thanks!

I’m sure it will be fine. Any quality synthetic will do and LiquiMoly is good stuff. Hell, for all we know Liquimoly makes the OEM branded stuff for BMW, just like how OEM BMW motor oil is rebranded Pennzoil.

They manufacture high quality oils/fluids to meet or exceed OEM specs and are very well respected. As long as you got what was recommended for this car, you'll be fine. What are you planning to use to suck out the old fluid (considering there is no drain plug). ? Trying to get all my ducks in order before doing this myself. |

How much fluid did you buy? Besides the pump and fluid, anything else at all that you picked up to perform this DIY? |

Ordered a replacement drain plug as well. The o ring is attached to the plug, so I figured it'd be a good idea to replace it. GENUINE BMW 33-11-7-525-064 Differential Drain Plug https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006OS4JW2..._6uSbCb8FKVRZ4 This is the part number I found via realism.com. I'll be doing that, brake fluid flush, and replacing my belt, tensioner and idler pulley this week. Parts are either here or on their way. Should have it all by Thursday.

I may redo the OFHGs at my next oil change. I did them about 8 months ago, but I seem to have sprung an oil leak somewhere. Not sure it's the OFHG again, but I figure it's a fairly simple and cheap thing, so it can't hurt. Plus, I used aftermarket gaskets, so I'm wondering if maybe they weren't as good as OEM. Just did my oil 1000 miles ago, so I've still got about 4k miles before I do this.

Just now realized that my phone autocorrected realoem to realism in a previous post.
Anyways, did the fluid change the other day. Didn't have any leaks but gear oil stinks. No problems so far, but I'll check it in a couple days to make sure I don't have any leaks and to double check the level. Can't say I notice much difference, but it does offer some peace of mind. All I needed was a fluid transfer pump, some sort of vessel to catch the extracted fluid, a 14mm hex socket (iirc), a ratchet, and a torque wrench (drain plug torqued to 60nm). I used a piece of a wire coat hanger in the extraction tube to hold a bend in it to get it to hook into the drain/fill hole and to keep it angled to the bottom of the diff. The LiquiMoly gear oil I used has a fill tube built into the bottle. Very handy so I didn't have to clean out the pump to transfer the new fluid into the diff. Ended up replacing just under a quart of fluid.
