idrive knob sticking

Anybody had their Idrive knob stick? I only sticks when moving to the right. It will not come back to center. I hate to replace the whole idrive.

The control assembly is easily replaceable. I'd try lubricating it first with WD-40.

WD-40 on this sensitive electronic control seems like a bad idea?

I've never had a problem with it. If you're concerned use the Contact Cleaner version.

Try a can of compressed air like CRC's Duster around the base of the iDrive while rotating back and forth. May have some debris under there impeding the rotation. Then go the WD-40 Contact cleaner route.

What did you end up doing? The knob on my idrive controller just started doing the same thing.

if you've ever spilt a syrup based drink, try spraying alcohol based window cleaner on controller, in around anything that moves while rotating and pressing buttons to thoroughly clean and/or break up grime. Window cleaner will dissolve syrup

You can also safely use Simple Green on electrical.
I’ve done so to unstick window switches etc on various cars, usually due to the aforementioned sugar drinks.

But I only use it when I can remove the part from the car, then rinse with alcohol to displace the water.

Same with me - when moving the wheel to the left from the center (resting) position, it will stay in that position and not move until I move it back to the center by myself.

I'm in a fairly new 2019 X5. I really don't want to have the dealer tear into the console of a car with a couple thousand miles on it.

Any info on solutions that actually work?

Thank you.

I wouldn’t use any alcohol based cleaners as you might end up discolouring or eating through the rubber feel plastic.

Mine was replaced under warranty. 2019 X5. Thankfully, no weird creaks, misaligned trim, or any other issues resulting from the replacement.

I would just spray contact cleaner on it, or even try some isopropyl alcohol on it.

Failing that, you'll have to take it apart. Not difficult to take it out of the car. Worst case if you break it, they're not that expensive to replace with a used one anyway.
