Not travel agents, they're ok. It's the online travel sites I stay away from. 30+ years in the hotel industry, and I was a revenue manager for many of those years, so I will speak to it from both the side of the consumer and the side of the hotel.

When you book with those online sites like Expedia, they "own" your reservation, not the hotel. So if you want to change it, cancel it, request something specific, you have to do it through the site you booked, not through the hotel, because the hotel doesn't have the ability/authorization to touch your reservation. It can be a real mess with red tape and delays, billing complications, etc.

Every single hotel chain is required to have "parity" across all booking channels, which means you won't find a rate on Expedia lower than what you'd find on that hotel's branded website. Maybe the same, but not lower. When those sites advertise that they have the "lowest rate", yeah, its technically true, but it's not lower than what you'd find anywhere else, it's equal to it.

From the hotelier's point of view, they are paying a chunk of what you paid to the website as a commission, usually 15% or more, so it's a less profitable reservation. You pay the same rate regardless, but the hotels get less of it.

At the end of the day, you can use those online travel sites to shop and get an idea of where you want to stay, but you're always better off booking the reservation with the actual brand website. You'll also earn loyalty points with the brand that you wouldn't earn if you book with an online travel site.

Thanks but you didn't really explain why.
You say the hotel gets less money because they pay a commission, that's enough reason for a customer to choose to go with them directly? Not for me, I'd be happier getting a bit of a discount by going directly. What you don't get in fidelity points with the hotel chain, you get with Expedia, 10% or more, and you get to use those with anything Expedia sells (hotels, cars, flights, etc.)

I was hoping for a stronger reason to not go with them. The fact Expedia owns the reservation has always proven beneficial to me. E.g. when I was told by a hotel that I couldn't get a refund because I had already checked-in (and the room had a strong smell of smoke). I went to another hotel anyway and "swallowed" the cost (it was unbearable).
Called Expedia and they refunded me. YMMV.

I spent 27 years in the US Navy helping them keep aircraft in the sky. Retired from that and spent the next 20 years working for the US Army helping them shoot aircraft out of the sky. I have since retired from that and all I do now is shoot curves in the Smoky Mountains in my M240.

Money decisions better with SM And a signed buyers order by the sales manager versus the salesman is more credible and more legal. The reason I said “transact” is you can talk to a salesman all you want to gather data, but when the rubber meets the road and you put a deposit down, you need a sales manager signature on the buyers order.

Absolutely, I'm in! I work in IT, specifically cybersecurity, for a mid-sized company in the UK. Been here for around 5 years. What I love most is solving complex security challenges – feels like a win each time. Driving a BMW 3 Series adds a nice touch to the daily commute!

I left my job at a store because the hours were all over the place and I wasn't really happy. Then, I found some great career opportunities and got into working with insurance. Now, I've been an Insurance Specialist at this not-too-big, not-too-small company for three years. We've got about 50 people here, and while I don't manage anyone directly, I do get to lead a bit on some projects.

I live in Tucson. The best part of my job is helping people figure out their insurance stuff, making a complicated thing feel simple for them. When I can do that, it's a really good day. A little secret from the insurance world: knowing the small details and asking the right questions makes a huge difference. I drive a BMW X5, which is awesome for driving around town or going on longer trips. Being part of a BMW-loving community through forums like this is pretty cool, too. It's fun to share stories and tips with people from everywhere.

This is insane how many times I got told this from ; client, colleague, friends, etc.

I own 4 cars, bought used, looking only for deals ;
They all are A1, clean AF, and no check engines, never used a towing.

Audi avant,
335xi m pack 6mt,
E91 6mt and
cayenne,

Paid 28k$ cad for all 4. So yeah, fcking deal that's almost impossible to find anymore on post covid.

and the total cost is way less than a loaded hyundai sonata...

repair cost is also probably similar, because all DIY, and people getting new cars not only lost on the new car devaluation, but also hire a mechanic to do repairs and maintenance.

nice a fellow cyber sec!

I also use to live part time in the UK due to my wife pursuing her PhD there.

I wish it was easier for me to find work in the UK due to being non citizen / no work visa lol.

otherwise i would never leave.
