Update: My local Mechanic quoted me 5800 for parts+labor and 1 year warranty for complete Engine replacement with one that was pulled from a car with 59k miles.
I am debating whether to bring it to the dealer and eat up 1k diagnostic fees to negotiate with BMW NA or just straight up get repair done from the local mechanic. |

Just heard back from my dealer in NJ. BMW NA will be providing me with new engine and parts required and I will need to pay 2500+tax for the labor. I guess it is fair deal... Will update on how it goes.

$2500 is cheap considering the damage and you'll be getting a new engine. On the other hand, it's $2500 you had to spend due to their negligent engineering.
I suppose it's a judgement call, but I don't really consider this taking full responsibility for their mistakes nor "making the customer whole". It's $2500 you shouldn't have had to spend, IMO. |

I hear your... I just spend $3186 on 2014 Benz CLA250 camshaft replacement . After driving about 100 mile check engine light is back for another reason related to evaporation system and they can't figure out the actual source of this new issue.

Add me to the list: N20 in 2013 X3 died at 75k miles
Preface: My wife drives a 2013 X3 with 75k miles on it. We purchased the vehicle back on 8/30/2016 with 70k miles pre-owned from our local BMW dealership in Michigan.
This past Monday (12/05/2016), my wife was driving us to work (due to an unrelated car failure), we were doing 50-60mph when the vehicle started displaying "oil pressure too low" and "drivetrain malfunction" warnings. We turned off the main roadway in an attempt to make it back home (<1 mile) in limp mode when the engine petered out. We called roadside assistance and got it towed to the dealership. We now had zero functioning vehicles (mini cooper s under the knife in my garage undergoing engine rebuild and clutch replacement, and my dad's Silverado with a fully dead unjumpable battery in the driveway). While on my way to the dealership I found this thread and started getting very worried. I was hoping that it was simply a piece of the chain guide that had broken off and stuck to the bottom of the oil sump. But as I kept reading the forum I started fearing the worst. Near the end of the day the dealership called to ask my consent to remove the valve cover and do a full endoscope, $1050. I resentfully consented and waited to hear back. Two days later I was told that the oil pump chain was broken, there was scoring in multiple cylinders and a crack in the block (the location of the crack was unclear). The end result: due to major damage caused by oil starvation we would need a new engine. Now, when we bought the car it came with a drivetrain "warranty" that essentially amounts to an insurance policy that the dealership purchased to cover the car, but at the time I was unsure of the duration/milage limit of that warranty. I was thinking that it was probably 90 days. The astute among you will notice that the failure occurred 96 days after the date of purchase. However, after examining the purchase agreement I discovered that the warranty is a 10 Month/10,000 mile "Q-Certified" Powertrain warranty thank goodness. So, it looks like I won't have to jump through any of the hoops with BMW NA like many others did. But, the "adjustor" from the warranty company has to verify the broken parts in person due to the scale and complexity of the failure/repair. I was told that this will most likely occur on Monday of next week, and will almost certainly result in full coverage for the replacement engine and labor. Fingers crossed. My wife and I are both recently graduated and really cannot afford $15k-$20k to replace the engine on a vehicle that was supposed to be the only reasonably "reliable" car either of us have ever owned. I will post an update once I get more information or if I get screwed by the warranty company, whatever comes first. If anyone has questions, I'm sure that I left things out. |

These stories are exactly why I purchased my 328i CPO'd. I'm at 56K now and climbing rapidly. It'll suck when it happens, but at least I will be covered 100%.
For those of you that have experienced the engine failure, I suggest filing a case with the NHSTA. If enough cases are documented it could turn into a recall. |

86k on mine, but I do alot of highway miles. (70%+), So far nothing wrong with it, even running a tune since 20k miles.
I still have 14k left on my extended CPO, so I'm going to ride it out and see how it goes. To this day, this car has had 0 issues that have left me stranded or out of a car outside of maintenance. I think over all the oil pump failing is a crap shoot, but all cars should never be driven with "low oil pressure light" on. That's a death sentence for any car. |

There's no evidence this is related to oil change intervals. davitd, in post 207 of this thread, said that he did his oil changes every 4 K and drove the car conservatively.
