420D High Pressure Fuel Pump Change

Hi All,

New to the Forum so Hey

Had my 420d 2 years its 2015 and just clocked 135k full BMW service history and was serviced 2 months ago.

Was on the duel carriageway 2 weeks ago and i got a Drivetrain Fault. Basically got it home and it died. It wouldnt start again. Took it to a BMW specialist who dianosed the issue as HPFP failure with a £6500 quote to repair it. Well thats not going to happen, basically to warrent their work they want to change everything from the intank pump to the injectors and everything along the way, basically will not touch it otherwise.

So i was left with no option to change it myself, im fairly able where cars are concerned but im struggling to get the pump out.

Current position. Flywheel locked off, HPFP tool inserter. Pump Mount removed, Top and Bottom (nighmare bolt) removed, bolt that is bolted on the end of the HPFP as been loosened as far as it will do as it just stops. Not sure if this is becuase the HPFP tool stop its going any further.

Anyway the pump is free and moves up and down, i just cannot seem to free the damn thing, its come out about 5mm maybe.

Any ideas?

The tis info is all there.
You will probably have to replace the injectors also.
There are companies that will clean them.
But if they’re full of filings, it’s not possible.
Or so i was told.
You do need to clean the fuel system tank & pipes.
On a 335d (auto gearbox). that has to be dropped also for access.

I think to replace HPFP you need to remove the chain, since the fuel pump is chain driven.
