N55 Installed new plugs & Coils - getting misfire codes

I recently got an Active AW flash along with FMIC, & Active Catless DP. Thought it would be a good idea to change plugs & coils as the car has 44K.
I purchased Bosch plugs & Delphi coils from FCP Euro, installed them myself. Once installed I started up the car, and immediately got misfire codes in 5 & 6. I checked fitment etc. to no avail. So I pulled the new coils in 5 & 6 & replaced them with the old ones, and viola - ran fine. The next morning I started up the car & got misfire codes again. This time in cylinders 2, 3, & 4. I pulled the new coils out and put in the old ones. Once again the car ran fine. For good measure, I pulled out the last remaining coil in #1 and replaced with the old ones. Went out and did a few hard pulls and no problems.
Anyone have any ideas???

Maybe try to replace the coils with the original old ones and test, I've seen someone post that their car just doesn't like the Delphi coils.

Edit: Sorry got lazy, should of read the entire post... I noticed you did try after I hit send... It does seem like your car as well, does not like the Delphi coils.

You don't really need to change your coils when doing plugs as coils last much longer. Just return the coils and use your old ones or buy a different brand.

Thanks for that feedback.
The really odd thing is that the old coils are also Delphi coils. Wonder if perhaps they sent me the wrong ones.

Anyone have any suggestions on what coils to use? Please supply part # also if possible.

1st off, you should have used the NGK SILZKBR8D8S 97506 plugs (1 step colder) instead of Bosch, and as m2rush stated no need to replace coils at 44k

Correct coils listed by realoem are Delphi 12138616153

Instead of the coils you should gave gone with aftermarket chargepipe if you haven't done so already. Stock plastic is not long for this world esp. after tune with higher boost

Wait for the loud pop and limp home mode one day...

Thanks for that reply. I am returning the coils, as old ones seem fine. Will keep this info for next plug change & go with the colder plugs - thx.

As for the charge pipe, when I had the mods done, I went with all Active AW parts - including a new charge pipe. At the time of install, they discovered that the Active charge pipe does not fit x-drive cars. They told me I would be alright for a while anyway. Plan on getting charge pipe, and doing DIY. Any recommendations for one that will fit 2014 435 X-drive?

I used the x-drive specific version from ER on my 435ix - it was DIY with car just up on ramps in drive and relatively ez install, I did do the CP at the same time as the FMIC though, so that made it easier.

Most difficult part is getting the 2 halves twisted in the correct position to clear everything:
  • Install top tube portion to intake and make sure locked on correctly
  • Tighten top hose clamp on upper tube to silicone coupler portion permanently, leave the bottom clamp loose (just tight enough to stay in position)
  • Do the fiddly bit of getting the FMIC end of CP aligned and locked in correctly
  • Then finally tighten that bottom hose clamp

Don't forget to install the plug into the Meth bung that is supplied on CP before installing. To hard to get to after, & if you forget all together = major boost leak

The funny things is that this happened to me as well. Bought the OEM Bosch spark plug and Delphi coil kit from FCP Euro and experience misfires after installing them. I also had misfires during the last HPDE that I went to.

I'm wondering if there's some difference between the factory/genuine Bosch spark plugs and Delphi ignition coils vs. OEM versions. There's a slight difference in appearance (color) for the plugs.

My car has a stock powertrain.

Honestly, unless you have a specific reason other than the anecdotal 'NGK plugs' are better, just go with factory plugs and be done with it. And as far as coil packs are concerned, is there a problem with BMW coil packs every 80K miles or so. You're willing to spend all that $ on mods but not on factory parts for the ignition? Doesn't really make sense. Good tires last only a couple/few years and they are close to $1k. Why skimp on ignition parts>

mabrooks12, responses like yours discourage people from sharing their experience and furthering the community. The OP has gone the cost and effort to test out a cost saving parts kit , then has reported their findings.

I am happy to know that the 62 dollar cheaper FCP ignition kit doesn't work as well as the OEM parts. Then I won't have to waste my time and in the future when others read these posts they can also make a better informed decision.

The reasons why they did it are their own, but if the inverse was true and we could save future F30 N55 owner 62 bux and give them extra confidence that it would work as well as OEM it would be great as well. Every thread can't be a success otherwise it just becomes a echo chamber for product advertisements.

Zinner, My post was not intended to discourage open discussion. It was intended to point out that a good majority of the successful use of aftermarket parts on a vehicle is anecdotal. Sometimes they work, sometimes they dont. What i have not seen much or any of are posts saying "OEM BMW" parts didn't work. As far as recommendation to go to a one step cooler plug, again its anecdotal. It may work better for some types of driving and climate conditions and gas types but its not for everyone. BMW knew what they were doing when they chose the spark plug temp. For most typical driving conditions one should replace in kind. I just dont understand why BMW owners will spend so much $ on mods and other ancillary parts but balk when it comes time to replace long mileage wear items with OEM parts that cost a extra few $? I use Mobil 1 0-40 because it is a good alternative to OEM BMW motor oil, that makes good financial sense because i change my oil every 6-7k miles. i change spark plugs every 60k miles, so a few extra $ to insure its not gonna cause issues is not a bad idea especially when you factor in the time to do the work.

I hate reading things like this when I'm about to change my plugs (one step colder)... I don't plan on changing coils... did you change coils?

Yes, and charge pipe. It started ran long enough for me to check the JB4 codes and shut it off. Now it just rolls

Factory plugs in my experience are the best. No issues at all after changing mine and I'm FBO BM3 producing close to 19lbs of boost.

The N55 is very particular when it comes to plugs and coils. For those components I stick to OE parts.
