F30 OEM Auto Shift Knob Replacement

Just wondering if anyone has tried replacing the auto shift knob with say an F10 M5 DCT knob or the like? Having searched around haven't really seen it done....

You can only interchange the following shifters

205 Steptronic Automatic

2TB Sport Automatic

Reason is that there is an ECU in the shifter and that the DCT shifters (from say the M3/M4) have a different ECU due to it's dual-clutch transmission vs the normal ZF found on the F30 range.

I bought mine off eBay for a fraction of the cost.

Here are the part numbers for the 2TB Sport Auto Shifter (Leather boot)

61319260970/61319291520/61319296898
*From Oldest to Newest P/N - Also easier to search by last 7 digits on eBay.

To install, just remove the iDrive trim (hands work), the shifter surround, Driver Experience/PDC controls and the centre console surround (only needs to be lifted from the rear) to have access to all 4 screws. Remove, unplug and install in reverse order. Should not require programming or coding once installed.

During Install

Installed

Hope that helps!

What are the differences between the 205 Steptronic Automatic and the 2TB Sport Automatic shifters? Is it just the slightly different shape and leather boot?

Shifter-wise, yes it's just cosmetic in that they're differently shaped and one is wrapped in napa leather (with the boot).

Though if you had optioned 2TB from the factory, it'd also be the added paddle shifters and the Sport programming - which you can code by changing your VO from 205 to 2TB and VO coding ICM, KOMBI, EGS and FEM_BODY (if I remember correctly.)

Hi, what will the coding do in terms of performance?

thanks!!! wahh its pretty pricey for the part :/ but it does seem like it would change your driving experience esp if you manually shift without paddles.

Don't believe so, even though the mounting points look slightly similar, according to Timbits93 the insides of the knob are different. Would have been keen to do the swap if they were interchangeable...

My 330e has 205 Steptronic Automatic and the paddle shifters.

If I would code the 2TB Sport Automatic, will it all work with my standard shift knob and paddle shifters?

I believe so as adding 2TB is just reprogramming how the transmission shifts

Ok thanks.
I was under the impression to have a 205 gearbox but I have this one:

S2TEA Automatic transmission w shift paddles

Any idea what the difference is?

this mod might be the one of the biggest wastes of money. There is zero to minimal difference.

It's like wheels - different strokes for different folks.

Gone were the days where you can just buy any gear knob you like and install it without worrying about coding and fitment. Sigh...

So this guy in China got the F80 gear selector to work in his F30, but he said it was the shop he took it to that figured out the coding. I don't know if this would be possible in the US, but I would be all over it if it were.
