Is BMW protecting the upcoming M3 engine by limiting the max output of the B58? Is the B58 actually capable of way beyond 400hp?

Yes, they definitely want to keep a gap for the next M3 to slot in above it.

Funny, in 16 years my VANOS (including Valvetronic) was absolutely fine; as was every other VANOS engine in cars owned by family and friends since 2001 or so. I guess we were the only ones!

What is the code for the RWD 2 series platform that replaces the F22? That is supposed to retain the RWD layout (and 6-cyl option) for M2 and 2 coupé purposes, leaving other 2s with the UKL-derived platform, much as things are now.

It is unknown whether the M2 will get a special high output B58 or a low output S58.
So for the next generation 2 series, will the only model with an inline 6 be the m2? I was curious to this since they now have the new 35 engine in the X2, would they just change it back to the m235i with that high output 4 cyclinder?

Will this stop the Toyota fanboys complaining that this engine will be in their new Supra??

I have a 2018 440ix GC and love this engine.

Enjoy it while you can as Dan Neil of the WSJ just published that the CFO of Continental stated that ALL German carmakers efforts to develop the ICE further will end by 2023.

"Internal combustion isn't going to get any better. Last year the chief financial officer for Continental, the Tier 1 global automotive supplier, lit up the chat rooms with his prediction that IC development at the German carmakers will effectively end by 2023."

That is the G4x chassis code that I referred to in my post.

Yes, it is a CLAR derivative and will thus be RWD.

As mentioned in my prior post, only the X5 and X7 currently have this revision of the B58 (the M1). As I also mentioned in that post, by the end of this year, all Gxx vehicles in the 3 and 4 product families will get a new high output variant (the O1). So, the 2020 X3 M40i will get that engine.

It is not 100% confirmed yet, but current signs are that the G42 2 Series coupe will top out with the B48 engine, yes. And yes, it is strongly likely that it will be a high output version like the one in M35i UKL vehicles. Whether it will literally be a longitudinal version of that exact engine or a new version with more power or perhaps other features such as 48V mild hybrid remains unknown. It will not arrive until mid 2021, so details are still scarce.

The Supra will basically be identical to the Z4 except for sheet metal and Toyota emblem on the steering wheel. Toyota dealerships will have to be trained to service BMW and have parts inventory.

There is big difference between stopping development of ICE and stopping production.

Not disagreeing. Never said anything to contrary.

But it means the S58/B58 are close to (if not) the best one might get now or in future from BMW in ICE configuration.

I am afraid he is correct.

The very reason I bought my M2.

As the Editor of Wards said in OP, there are 4 Electric Motors in the Top 10....

He would have never thought it.

BMW will continue to improve their engines at exactly the rate that they need to in order to remain competitive.

When automakers comment about plans to scale back ICE development, they mean that they are no longer placing as heavy of investment into future engine architectures or ICE technology as they once were. They don't mean that they are going to stop developing incrementally improved engines.

It is difficult to predict when the last of the ICE engines will appear on the market, but estimates under, say, ten years from now would seem to be aggressive and beg for a degree of skepticism. We should accordingly be skeptical of any suggestion that engines on the market ten years from now will offer no significant higher output than those of today.

Nothing I have posted said anything about IC Engines not being on the market.

People seem to be reading into something not posted

No, I was merely responding to this statement:

The point being, even if the B58/S58 are the last by name, the versions we get ten years from now may very well bear no greater resemblance to the ones we have today than the engines from ten years ago do to today's.
