It will no doubt be an epic car, BMW will have learnt from the shortcomings of the early F80’s and come straight out of the gates with a proper machine this time.

But I can’t help thinking how relevant it will be for those who will only use it on the public roads when the M340i looks to be technically an incredible car, at no doubt two thirds the cost.

I bet it's getting close to 80k for the m xdrive and as above, just get the m340i, its way too powerful already for public roads.

My BMW's are now planned..

M340i touring when they're a year old,
M4 gran coupe when they are two years old..

Keep 335d touring until I can afford the above

M Xdrive will be a revelation in these. Be prepared to shell out a lot of cash for top models.

Pure/Poverty
Competition +10%
CS +50%
CSL +100%

Whatever way you look it though, it's great fun and great times awaiting a new M car release.

The pics look nice, better than the new bog standard 3 IMO, and significantly better than the new 7. Have you seen those grilles?!

But I'm holding out for a 440i Gran Coupe, or failing that, an M4 Gran Coupe

Yes the new 7 grilles are utterly utterly ridiculous, I think BMW have started smoking crack!

Didn't I read somewhere that the rumour is BMW are ditching the GC? Maybe I made that up...?

In the article it says no M3 touring, but insinuates m4 gran coupe instead,

Ive got well over 400 hp in f31 format and find the power very well managed.

We can be sure that there will be a significant difference in how the M-lite and real M3 will be engineered and how they drive. BMW will make damn sure that that difference is very noticeable even in normal public road driving, they'll have no interest in making a silver gosling that kills the golden goose.

Not a lot of the appeal of a M car is based on the power. For me, 10% of why I want a M would be power (over the standard range), 70% handling and 20% because they are just damn iconic.

In 2001 I switched from an E39 (4.4 V8) 540i to an E39 (5.0 V8) M5. On paper these are fairly similar cars, but in practice they are very different in almost every respect. There is something special about an M car which you feel every time you step inside, and every time you take it to the dealer...

It's not all about speed it's about the way a car drives and feels.

I don't get these comments the F80 was a proper machine straight of the box I drove one at my dealers launch back in 2014 it was a proper car, fast, direct and planted a real drivers car my reference point at the time was an e92 CP M3.

This guy liked it as well at launch...one of his first adjectives is spectacular.

An M4 GC xDrive is in my view quite close to being the perfect car. Rather conveniently it'll be going on sale at about the time I might consider a change of car.

Too long BMW have created M3/M4s which lack that last element of practicality.

Yes but the later cars were better (ie LCI M3/M4) onwards. And CP better again.

I think the early M3/M4's got some criticism, hence why BMW probably made the changes. Traction was one of the biggest issues on the early cars as it developed too much torque early on the rev range for the rears to cope with.
