thanks guys...that's settled then one on the other side needs replacing too as down on read
I've had oe dunlop sport maxx gt rft on them and no complaints other than wear.2 new ones are £450 on blackcircles There is also michelin latitude sport 3 zero pressure rft but offer of £75 off 2 which brings the price down to £370. They seem to have same noise rating (70db) but are A for wet grip and Dunlop are B but not star marked. Anyone has experience with michelin latitude sport 3. |

From gov.uk
"When assessing cuts in a tyre, it is permissible to check whether a cut is deep enough to reach the ply or cord by using a blunt instrument to open the cut taking care not to cause further damage. The following criteria should be used when assessing a cut in a tyre: -any ply or cord that can be seen without touching the tyre - fail -if by folding back rubber or opening a cut with a blunt instrument, so as not to cause further damage, exposed ply or cord can be seen irrespective of the size of the cut - fail -if a cut which is more than 25mm or 10% of the section width whichever is the greater, is opened with a blunt instrument and cords can be felt but not seen - fail" |

While personally I would replace it, it's not actually an MOT fail IMO. That is simply the protective rubber in the rim protector element which has become damaged, rather than the sidewall itself. If the cords cannot be seen, exposed or felt then it's fine, irrespective of how damaged it looks!

Yikes... That tyre also looks flat (and its been run flat too with the band of wear on the shoulder).
Consider some tyres with more flange protection ('MFS' code on the tyre when buying) although it wouldnt save you from a hit like that. You could also try a wider profile if possible. I tought my Mrs to pull 1ft away from a kerb and always reverse in the last bit using the mirror in a low position. Shes never kerbed a wheel since. Maybe worth some coaching? |

getting 2 michelin latitude sport 3 zero pressure star marked at the front on Thursday I'll update on their performance. The rears have star marke dunlops with 5mm tread left I can't bear to think of changing them to michelins to match alk 4...it would be a great waste no?

So long as car is NOT xdrive, you will be fine with two different pairs front and rear. If xdrive you risk some almighty damage and not recommended.

ha...blackcircles couldn't deliver the tyres. I also then noted a. these are starmarked but no equivalent star marked ones for back wheel b. bmw clearly state not having star marked tyres in xdrive is bad for transfer case etc. So luckily found Dunlop sport maxx gt runflats matching my rears on national tyres for £399 for a pair around £60 cheaper than blackcircles or kwik fit etc. Installation on Monday.
