Smoking from my engine bay

I have just bought a 2017 bmw 330i from the dealership. They declared nothing wrong with the car before I got the keys and 3 days later the engine oil is very high and I have to baby the car home. Once I popped the hood white smoke was coming out of the engine oil cap. The sensor on my dash said it was at a reasonable temperature but the screen said it was over heating. Any ideas?

Are you confusing oil temp on the gauges with coolant temp warning? Sounds like you need to take it back to the dealer...

No the oil temp is fine but the computer is telling me the engine is overheating with seems odd. I might get it towed over to the dealership anyways however

Did the engines Oil Temperature exceed 'normal' temp range?

White smoke = steam (water > boiling temperature).

A breached head gasket can cause coolant to be mixed with oil….seeing steam coming out of the place where oil is added is potentially a bad sign.

Get that car to Mr Dealer….on a flatbed truck.

The oil temp can be fine while the coolant overheats. They are related obviously but not 1:1. Same way your coolant gets up to temp much faster than oil warms up. So its entirely possible to have normal oil temp while the coolant overheats.

Might vary by state but if it's still under the original warranty yes.

OP: very inexpensive and simple/quick to borrow head gasket tester from auto parts store and DIY- however if car came with any sort of warranty you should see Dealer first. If car was sold as-is, no implied warranty still worth Dealer visit/discussion- the worst they say is ' not our responsibility'.

I agree go to the dealer either way. Personally, I would still test it so you know and knowing will help you from getting taken advantage of by the dealer.
