A nyc garbage truck sideswiped my f30 last week.
It's the modern line bumper looks like it will need to be replaced. The fog light is not working and the the parking sensors on that side don't work.

Anyone know what's the best place to get the body work done for a reasonable student budget in NYC? And also where I may be able to buy the modern line bumper? I really like the look of it don't want anything different.

Also just bought the car this month haven't even drove it 450 miles until it got hit.

Sorry to see this. There's never a good time for car damage! Try posting on the regional forum - someone there might have a better idea for a shop given your location: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=401

If the garbage truck hit you, their insurance shall pay for the repairs. Unfortunately there is a good chance that is totalled unless you approve used or aftermarket parts. Likely suspension damage. sorry to see pics like that especially on recent ownership

I'm fine to use foreign items especially since most everything is cosmetic

Why is the garbage truck insurance's not paying for your damage?

At the very least, do you comprehensive insurance?

I unfortunately don't have comprehensive and wouldn't go through seeing that they raise the price on a customer even when you're not at fault.

And the sanitation dept civil suit can last over 1-2 years they told me.

No fully legally parked. But suing the city in court is not an easy process. There is no video, just one eye witness

So they deny involvement and responsibility? You are making a claim on their insurancen, not a civil suit. Am I missing something?

I believe some local govt are self insured since they are well funded. So in order to make a claim, you probably would have to sue them.....

Pretty much, this is a long and tedious process

That sucks. It looks like you will need more than just the bumper replaced.

Moral of the story is to be appropriately insured. I'm sure your lender required full coverage? Or purchased the car with no loan?

Wait, if you carry insurance you call your insurance guy and THEY call the city's insurer. That's it. You don't have to do any negotiatiing. Your insurer will ask you to stop by their recommended body shop for an assessment and estimate. If you choose to put the deductible down (like $500 on my Allstate plan), you can get the car back in 1-2 weeks. Your insurance will in turn go after the city.

That's literally it. Just had a similar issue happen to be last August. Don't give up hope.
But do get your insurance people on the line ASAP and possibly visit or call police services to take your report.

Bought it outright
Second making a claim is always adversely shown on your insureds rating history

This is significant damage compared to what it looks like. I'd suggest getting a damage estimate from a body shop before you start throwing money at it. I'd consider selling it as is and starting over. A cheap repair is not a correct repair. Bummer of a situation.

I've gotten a quote from a relatively mid priced shop. It will run me 2800-5500 depending if I use all original parts. I will also go to more expensive shop that only works on European vehicle collisions. I'm guessing it will run around 5-8k.
Since I've started my claim and will not rest until I have the city of NY pay I will get the car the best treatment it deserves.

The city will be liable to pay me all that it's done!

OP simply file the claim with your Insurance. If you vehicle was parked and unattended, garbage truck hit it, that's why you pay for insurance. This will end up being an Uninsured motorist claim. You will have to pay a deductible so again your ins will handle it. If you have any way of getting a video/surveillance then maybe this can be a bread crumb for them to find out exactly which truck did this.

Sorry but it does suck! I'd be pissed as well. 450 miles..BS! But think of this as a bump in the road. I do this for a living btw. Good luck!
