MPPSK with OEM midpipe

If you like your power with a capital P but like to keep a low profile, the options from BMW for the B58 motor are limited.

After fitting the MPPSK kit, together with an Akropovic downpipe, I've found the power upgrade is still written lower case, but the SOUND was written far to large for my tastes. Most annoying is the drone at 2,500 RPM in Comfort Mode.

What to do?

I went to Exhaust World in Curzon St, North Melbourne (Australia) and got them to refit the OEM mid-pipe. They welded a slightly angled tail on the OEM second resonator, and then fitted into the MPPSK pipe via a neat flange. All done in under two hours.

Looking forward.

Looking backward.

Looking from the back.

Now the sound level is back to 7/10 in comparison to OEM, which was about 3/10.
The Sport Mode open pipes sound much more refined (deeper burble), and the Comfort Mode volume is back to just over OEM levels.

As the ECU is torque mapped, there is no impact on the power upgrade (except that it is still not enough).

Cool. For others it may be more cost effective to just buy a Vibrant resonator or something.

Videos? I hear!

Here is a Youtube video, taken today.

All the video clips taken from the drivers seat, with driver's window down in the garage, and as noted in the other clips.

Comfort Mode is still slightly louder than OEM, but not annoyingly so.

Sport Mode is much louder than OEM Sport Mode, but it is no longer metallic sounding like the normal MPPSK tone.
The exhaust also doesn't drone when cruising so it is actually now good to use every when.

Good value for the cost of 90 minutes labour to refit the OEM mid-pipe and weld up the adaptor and flange.

Hey it doesn't sound so bad! Congrats you're the first to do this. I always hoped BMW would sell the MPPSK rear muffler only, but obviously they didn't so i ended up with the MPE.

Which one is better MPPSK or MPE?

I think the message is simply to keep the OEM exhaust, or at least the OEM mid-pipe. The OEM exhaust is one piece so ask the installer to cut it between the second resonator and the muffler. If you can lower the rear seat backs, it fits in nicely for the trip home, and eventually to the exhaust specialist for re-fitting.

Keeping the OEM mid-pipe costs nothing, and gives an option if the MPPSK is just too “rice burner” for your personal taste.
