Increased Battery Discharge

My F30 didn't get driven for five days. The first time I drove it, I got an "Increased Battery Discharge. Some Electrical Devices were Switched Off" message. I have subsequently taken a 90 mile road trip to pick forest mushrooms and commuted twenty miles to and from work.

Has anyone been able to "drive away" this message? I'd like to avoid going to the dealer only for them to tell me to drive it for a while.

I get that message frequently. Usually goes away after driving some distance on the freeway. Most of my driving is local commuting so I put the battery charger on when it pops up more than once or twice.

One thing which helps is to remember to hit the start button twice when stopping the car. The second push turns off a lot of electronics that otherwise remain on for a good while, draining the battery.

Good point and I hate this double pushing of the start button. But I guess there is no other way...

I'm pretty sure the increased battery discharge is related to a faulty proximity lock door handle. The car is at the dealer currently. I'll let you know if/what the battery discharge remedy was.

I got it when I updated the JB4 S2 software. Downgraded the software and haven't had it since. Terry said not to worry about it, so I guess I probably shouldn't have reverted to my old software.

Apparently, it randomly pops up and no one is sure why (JB4 related forums) but it has never caused anyone's battery to be dead. They think it may be a 'false alarm'.

If this is happening to cars without the JB4, then it could be something real?

I havent changed anything on my car, nor my driving habits in the past year. I got it once or twice in the first 15 or so months I owned the car.

Last week, I got it twice. In the past 3 days, I've gotten it every day. In the morning when I start it, I see the message but not if I do any driving during the day, nor during my drive home from work, even if I haven't driven it since my morning commute. It's cold for the south I suppose, but my car probably doesn't see freezing temps in my closed garage, more like high 30s at worst, but closer to 40s.

I read the forums and seems a bunch of folks in last gen models had this issue ('08s) a couple years ago, but I haven't seen much complaints on newer cars.

Anyone else having this issue? It would be a slight annoyance to take off my JB4 (again) to bring it in to the dealer and have them look at it, but it would be a much bigger annoyance to have my car not start due to a dead battery.

Mine was due to a faulty driver door handle with the proximity lock. It kept "waking up" a module, which drained the battery somewhat. A software safeguard was in place to prevent too much discharge, but warned me in IDrive.

Awesomesauce.

And it's not necessarily the same either. The other thread is in relation to low ambient temps.

As an aside, my car has been stationary in the ridiculously cold weather we've been experiencing for almost 3 weeks. I jumped in for the first time over the weekend and it fired right up without issue. Anyone having trouble just might have a problem with a faulty component/module. As I noted in the other thread, it was very common in the early E83 X3.

There is. Code the car to have electrics shut off when the door opens after shutting off engine. Default mode drove me crazy. I want everything off when I exit and lock car.

Useful comment. When I open door and shut off car, everything turns off.

When you lock the car everything shuts off without coding. Thanks for acknowledging my useful comment.

I apologize for bringing up this old thread. I had a similar issue with my car, it turns out that I had a poor battery cable connection, the negative terminal was loose, so it caused the error message to appear. Cleaning the battery post from corrosion and re-tightening it made my car work properly. I did a lot of searches on this issue and came on in depth article which may be worth reading, search for " BMW Increased Battery Discharge on YOUCANIC" and you will see an article that goes over common causes and possible fixes, you can read about it yourself. I hope this information can assist someone else with a similar issue.

Not quite. There are background programs that are always running, the alarm for instance. That's why the battery will slowly discharge when the car isn't driven for a while. If you don't drive regularly, and/or when you do it's only short trips, use a battery maintainer so that it powers the background programs, not the battery.

I have a similar issue, I had to reply to this thread because I can't post my own forum. My issue started about 5 months ago when my car began to say the battery had dischraged while stationary and it would not let me use comfort access which I am sure is due to the car cutting down power usage to safe power. Which makes sense since it would take lightly longer to start up. So I took it to get checked and the mechanic said the battery was dead so I got a new one. and about 2 weeks after I got the new battery the issue came back, and sometimes the comfort access gets disabled but it starts up fine while blaring the low battery warning, and I even checked it with the obd scanner multiple times which had mixed results of being between 99-100% of charge, so far I have come to the conclusion that its the negatve charge cable with the intellingent battery sensor since the battery seems to be fine and the sensor could be loosing connection making the car think its low but when the start starts to pull power to turn it on it has no issue doing it since the battery is charged. I just want to make sure this might be the issue before I go and replace the battery sensor.
