More variables to add to this great mystery.
Yeah my 2013 is the same way even though the VIN indicates I have the device.

For the F30 I found it on the 335i, not on the 328i. What's even more troubling is that it appears to have been present since the 2012 MY.

For the F32, it's on the 435i.

I don't know what's going on but I don't like it.

Wow, really?

If it's artificial then it's fake no matter how it sounds.

The system's that have actual ports to allow the real engine sound to be louder into the cabin are at least letting you hear the real engine.
But the system's that create the sound and put it through the audio system are silly.

If BMW is using artificial sound makers, then they should have stopped before they started.
C'mon already. What's next, various BMW engine sounds selected via I-drive so I can pretend my engine sounds like an M3, or a Ferrari?

All I'm saying is that the part is not present in those cars, just reporting what I'm seeing on BMW own's part catalog.
My 335i sounds fine. It's a 2013.
But what I hear in the cabin is also what I'm hearing outside when the windows are down.
I hope it's not in my car.

In the OP's car it sounds as if the system has failed so that he hears what the engine was doing a few seconds ago.
That's f'd up.

I've been aware of this thread for a few weeks now, and have been taking notice. I have been actively and very obsessively listening to my engine, exhaust and cabin noises in general, and there is no way no how my car has anything artificial. Whether it's being amplified, synthesized or what have you, it just isn't there. I recently had an MK6 GTI with the "Sound Aktor" enhancement, and although very subtle, you could still pick it up. My f30 has none of this. I can guaran-DAAAMN-tee it. I have a 2013 M Sport 335i.

Speaking on this subject, per the F80post:

But, the good news is that we've confirmed with BMW Germany that it's a live amplification of the S55 engine's natural sounds. There is no artificially generated sound or pre-recorded track being played. This sound amplification takes place through the M3/M4/s stereo speakers.

Since it is part of the amplifier, this makes sense. That being said, I have not noticed it in my 2013 335.

I brought my '12 328 in for service today and got a '14 328 as a loaner. The engine sounds completely different. Nice deep growl. BMW did something different to the '14s for sure... don't know if it's active sound or some sort of induction tweak but it definitely sounds meaner than my car.

The ZF8 is unreal, too. Even the non-sport transmission shifts like lightning. Love it. Next car may be a 335i Sport ZF8 with MPPK & MPE

Floor it.
My Comfort Mode and Sport mode sound exactly the same at any given revs.
The difference I notice is that engine revs are kept higher in sport mode so sport mode always sounds better. That is the sound of extra burning fuel!

Sounds MUCH different for my '14 too. That's why I'm asking if I can code it to comfort.

Might be different for each country but for an Australian 2014 328 I can confirm that it does have ASD.

I have already played with the ASD through coding and when off there is a HUGE difference

I understand that my 2014 335xi with m sport package has the option but has to be coded to activate. Driving in sport with the windows down and radio off is the best way to hear the engine and exhaust. I will code it sometime later and see. Have a 2014 435i m-sport I'll try it on first. Cars sounds great with it off though.

Pay attention: there is no possibility to activate ASD if you have the basic hi-fi system like mine
Amplified hi-fi at least or H&K are requiered

Yeah a friend of mine just got a 2014 328i and it sounds great. Much different than the '12 loaner I had a while back. I hated the way that car sounded and felt--totally anemic and tinny.

Interesting I got a 2014 loaner and it definitely did sound a lot better than the '13 loaner I had previously (though I spent more time with it and drove it in sport more).

Honestly, who really cares if it's fake? It's a 4 cylinder eco-engine and after a week with a 328 vs my 335i I personally found myself liking the 328 better, the new "Gruntier" tone did not hurt. Would be interested if they also applied this to the 335i.

I would almost rather them admit it's fake and let me turn it up to 11 so I can have the fun of a loud exhaust and turn it off when the wife gets in the car. My Corvette was so loud she was embarrassed to be seen in it.

Good point. The AC Schnitzer exhaust on my M3 got so many compliments from people on the outside, but inside certain RPMs would make it drone through my skull.

Porsche does not synthesize engine noise...they actually tap the intake manifold and import the noise into the cabin.
