Hi.

I recently changed the rear brake discs on my F31. After I changed them the hand brake worked poorly. I tried adjusting the star wheel on the brake shoes but it only got a little bit better (the brake shoes are brand new). I have to pull the hand brake real hard (7-10 clicks) to lock the wheels on a hill. What should I do?

There are two adjustments, the star wheel on the shoes for the clearance between the shoes and the drum, and the parking brake cable:

What Bill said. If you find the lever coming all the way up and little or no grip from the brakes, there is too much slack on the cable.

Adjusting the hand brake is part of the official procedure for swapping in new rear rotors. The gross adjustment of the handle travel is done by the handle under the leather boot. Then you use the adjustment at the rear wheel to lock it in tight. If you only did the brake shoe adjustment on the wheel, you need to undo that and start the process over. You might have hit the limit on the shoes and you might not be able to adjust it properly until you back it out and start over.

there's a lot of opposing opinions on this, but what's always worked better for me if "bedding" the parking brake shoes to your new rotors. just drive slowly and gently pull the brake up for a few seconds then test it out and repeat as needed.

I've always found the parking brake to hold better after that. good luck.
