F31 M sport suspension help
Hi;
I have an F31 (2013-318d) with 0704 M sport suspension packeg. The shock absorber is weak and i would like to change it.(both side) would the following shock absorber be good for it? Bilstein 22-220080 On the site of the bilstein there is no my OEM number: 31316791581 (new: 31316866114), but when i use the catalog and i get the parameters of the car it offers... I am uncertain...one website says it is good for my car on the other that it doesn't .. what would you recommend instead? I would keep the original coil. Thanks for the help. |

No, it is NOT a good replacement for your Msport. First, getting the terms straight, Bilstein 22-220080 is a front strut, not a shock. And I can tell you from first hand experience that it is NOT an M-sport replacement, and that its softer than the STANDARD suspension OEM strut on an F33 or an F36. So how do I know? Well, in a heck of a coincidence, the shop that replaced the struts on my M-sport F36 screwed up and just last week put that strut on, instead of the H4 22-220066 that is the correct Bilstein replacement for my OEM M-sport 31316883327. OMG, the 22-220080 H4 was one of the softest, floatiest (just made up a new word for this) struts I've ever met, and the car wallowed around like Dad's Buick. Much worse than my wife's F33 standard suspension. I haven't decided if I want to gamble on the other H4 ($90), or just go safe with the more expensive OEM strut; ( $260.) I'm calling Bilstein next week to see if the 66 shock is valved differently, or if it's just an 80 with a shorter shaft.

Yes, those are correct part numbers for the front. I repalced all 4 after 100k miles and was quite surprised, not in a good way, how firm the ride became. Seems to soften a bit now after a few months driving.

Thank for the reply. Then it looks like the original will be a good choice.

I replaced my struts/shocks at 44k with Bilstein B8s and HR sports. Turned out the best thing you can do for the car.

Ah, my apologies. Forgive my rant about the *0080. I missed that you have a wagon, and I've got the GranCoupe. That's why the *0080 is used on yours as a front-strut Msport replacement, but on my F36 is the standard strut replacement and NOT the Msport. Very interesting that one poster says it firmed up his ride, but on my Msport GC it was much floatier than the OEM. I wouldn't have thought that the Msport front suspensions would have been that different between the F31 and the F36. Anyway, glad that you got all the right answers! I'll continue my "discussion" with the repair shop about getting my strut right.
