N47 320d fuel leak, something worth checking!!!

Been a while since my last post but thought this worth sharing for anyone with an N47, in my case a 320d (assume same part on 318d/320d/325d/328d etc).

Strong fuel smell in cabin after a long journey, on inspection found a significant fuel leak. A supply hose had rubbed against a plastic clip for long enough to put a hole through it. Conveniently the wear is on the underside of the pipe which is barely visible so thats awesome, especially in the dark, in the rain.

Looks like the item has been redesigned a few times, maybe for this issue? Found a single video on YT of the same issue so guessing not a common thing, but not isolated either, and firmly within the realm of the possible.

The only time this will have been interefered with would have been by BMW several years ago to replace the timing chains, but hey, not pointing any fingers.

Worth taking 2 minutes to check the pipe is all good, or dont, up to you!

I want to point out that last month, this exact part failed on me. It had sprung multiple leaks and depleted my fuel so fast that I didn't even notice until I had run out half way through my 1 hour commute home (started the journey with around 130 miles left according to the car, and the car ran out of fuel just as I had pulled up to the fuel station to fill up for the week). Funny enough, the car said I still had 60 miles left but the analogue fuel gauge stated that the tank was fully depleted.

The place I got the car from ended up replacing the whole line from the HPFP to the fuel filter (these are two lines, the fuel feed line as mentioned by OP, and the front feed line that connects this bit to the fuel filter). What happened next is that the clip on the 'new' front feed line wasn't secure enough and just detached from the fuel filter mid-drive causing yet another breakdown. I've currently got it zip-tied (for my own sanity at this point) until my next fuel filter change where I will just switch out the whole line for all the good parts that I have.

One thing I should note: there was no observable damage to the fuel feed line as you've posted here. The only way I knew this part was the culprit was removing it and blowing compressed air through it to see where the residual diesel ended up going, which ended up being through multiple invisible holes on the hose. I am still surprised that such small holes led to my car going from a quarter tank to 0 in 30 mins.

This was over a month ago (start of March) and since then, car is driving fine (albeit with a few things that I've mentioned in my own thread in this forum but they were already present before all of this).

Also, nice cat!

I inspected mine yesterday while under the hood, for this exact reason. It looked good.

Same issue!

Hi guys, I actually had the same exact issue on mine starting 29/07/2022. This caused me to lose 100 miles of range in approximately 10 miles. Car only loses diesel when it's on. In the process of getting this sorted. My car has 55,000miles on the money, so worth keeping an eye out or checking on your own cars if you're approaching this mileage maybe?

I have the same problem

I have the same problem... I lost almost 12 gallons of diesel while driving 10 miles. Luckily i noticed the issue when I reached home and there was a lot of diesel smell... Is it easy to replace this myself or needs to go to the shop? Tentatively, how much would an Independent mechanic charge for replacing this?

I have also just come across the same issue! When I had the issue looked into, it didn’t take long for someone to take the part out (max 30 mins). The issue now though is that fuel has leak in the engine bay and this has a very strong smell. To those that have come across this issue, did you get the leak cleaned? What’s the best way of getting this done to remove it completely?
