340i MPE. M Performance Exhaust. Installled. Impressions.
The MPPSK was always on the radar (and still might be) but even at the reduced price I couldnt justify it just yet.
I was also considering getting original one modified but jumped at the chance of a 2nd hand MPE instead. It's hard to find any real world info on the just MPE backbox as I guess the MPPSK has stole all the thunder. All (most) of the videos/reviews are about the MPPSK not the MPE. The MPE goes under the radar somewhat. I've had 340i MPE backbox installed. A few notes; The exhaust clamp is permenantly attached and not removable. (I ordered one not knowing this as all older MPE's use a seperate sleeve) The exhaust comes with a actuator blanking plug when ordered from new. (the previous owner had his MPE removed by BMW and they left it still attached to his car!) Wow.. What a difference. It was 2nd hand so already nicely coked up and run in. Both exits are always open as there is no switchable actuator valve on the MPE. Cold start is noisier as a result and its obviously a free'er flowing design. The burbles at standstill reving are much more prominent. Louder than standard exhaust sport mode with a stronger splutter. No more single sooty exhaust tip either. My wife drove it this morning and it sounded very nice when she drove out of our close. Lifting off at medium/high revs (4.5k+) I get rapid gun fire. Very MPPSK like. I also 'feel' the exhaust noise in my lower back which was a bit odd at first but sure adds to the nature. No drone either, it's impressive how BMW achieve more noise and 'feel' but never seem to add any unwanted drone. (I've had 3 MPE back boxes on different cars and they have all been just as impressive) I wasn't expecting it to sound this good. Overall, I'm really very impressed and singing the praises for the backbox. Ohh and it pings and ticks when cooling down. Very cool. And the fact it can be had 2nd hand (the MPPSK can't within reason) makes this a real DIY bargain. Anyone wanting more sound with some grin factor (fast pops/bangs on the overrun at higher revs make me chuckle) should deffo consider the MPE backbox. It really does hold it's own. (this is all me just trying to convince myself I don't want the MPPSK anymore ) Last edited by M33DLO; 02-04-2020 at 02:48 PM.. |

I'm almost in the same boat.
Too tight to lash out for the MPPSK, so gone down the MPE route. But mine has a straight through front pipe as well. Can be "subtle" with a light foot but can also quite crisp when you want it to be. Still a difference between Sport and Comfort, even without the valve. Still toying with the MPPSK but no real reason to..... |

The MPPSK is the best 2k I've ever spent, I played with different ideas and weighed it all up and just thought "f**k it, Im only here once". Never regretted it

Im half tempted to keep an eye out for the MPE exhaust and get my exhaust guy to put the valve on it from the standard box.
The MPPSK system rarely comes up for sale 2nd hand. Other option i was looking at is you can buy the remus back box for about £450 plus tail pipe trims, and it has a valved exhaust as well. I dont want to loose the feature of shutting the car up when needed, and i know the standard box there is very little difference volume wise with the flap open vs shut but with a "louder" box it will be something il want. |

You cant fit the mppsk 2nd hand. Well you can fit the exhaust half but the other half of the kit (the power half) is BMW workshop only and cant be moved between cars.
You cant order the power remap separately either. And as you say, the exhaust (the sound half) rarely comes up, as then the car would have the power half without the sound/exhaust half which could have adverse consequences. The MPE is a very good alternative, and possibly better than most realise as the MPPSK steals all the headlines and gets the attention. (And rightly so as it's a great bit of kit) I'm surprised at how good the MPE is. Last edited by M33DLO; 02-04-2020 at 02:46 PM.. |

I dont doubt, it's a great upgrade and I will look to join you at some point, hopefully they dont sell out too soon.
MPE/MPPSK in comparison for those thinking about options: They can be installed 2nd hand. 400-500pound 2nd hand. They come up on the bay and forums. Easy DIY fit at home if you want. Sounds better than it should for just a back box. More refined than it should for just a back box. No power increase so insurance amendment is less of a worry for some. Looks the same as the MPPSK. Can be removed and sold on come trade in time. But: It's not as racy as the MPPSK. No power increase. Not switchable (not valved) |

I was just going to say - the pot looks very differently, so I wouldn't agree they look the same at all. You don't need to go looking for it - you see it when you drive behind
I have not driven the MPE, but it seems that most agree that the MPE delivers 40% of the experience you get with MPPSK (power increase aside). It is certainly worth it, as it is cheaper, easier and still a noticable improvement over stock, but it is nowhere close to what you get with MPPSK, which however comes with a corresponding price tag..

I'll rephrase. To the trained eye, the MPE and MPPSK visial differences are apparent from the rear of the car. If you drive behind one and squint, you will notice the difference in silencer design. The MPE is a printed logo rather than the MPPSK embossed logo. Or get on your knees and look under the rear diffuser. The tips are the same. To un trained eye, they look the same unless pointed out. From my brief encounter with the MPPSK at a dealership. I'd say the MPE is 60% of the noise... But obviously no power increase, which could be worth the current £1500 (£3000 new !!!) price in some books. I'm not saying the MPE is as good, it's not. Factor in the price, ease, availability and noise it's a pretty darn good compromise, though. (I'm still trying to convince myself I dont want the MPPSK ) |

No disrespect, but why do people want their diesels to sound louder...? It is not really an appealing sound, most would agree...
