Talking SoCal and a Sixt 428i F33 Rental. Random thoughts.

SoCal:

Do they give you a BMW when you take up residence?

Is traffic the price you pay for Summer 24/7?

Some serious population density there.

Why all the camo'd BMWs in Manhattan Beach?

Sixt / 428i F33:

Very little storage when the top is stowed.

Glad we got the 35i motor in our personal car but the 28i rental was sufficient when sitting in traffic on the 5 and the 405.

Didn't care for the bare bones car, glad ours is optioned out.

Sixt at LAX:

I can't recommend them. Sixt was a our limo service when we did ED but this rental service at LAX was horrible.

More thoughts as they come to me.

Our 8 day trip included beaches / towns from Santa Monica all the way down to the SX race in San Diego. Over night stays in Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and La Jolla.

Regarding LA, there literally is no amount of money I would take to live there.

There may not be a lot of trunk room with the top down, but there's considerably more than people realize. You can get quite a bit under the protection cover.

We did manage to fit 2 carry-ons under the partition. My previous convertible experience was only with soft tops.

Did you notice the button under the trunk lid that raises the entire top apparatus while the top is stowed? It raises the whole thing about a foot so you can retrieve or store stuff under the partition.

Agreed. Horrible experience at SixT at LAX. Will never use them again.

I did. I knew it was related to the operation of the top but was unsure of it's function. Pressed it once or twice at different times, even had a green LED come on some point but I had more important things to do with my time and certainly wasn't going to read a manual.

Thanks for the info though.

I didn't realize SiXT is in LA now. If you don't mind my asking, what was the daily rental rate?

I've been eyeballing turo.com to try out their BMW rentals, but they're pricey (plus since it's not a "real" renting service like Avis or Enterprise, your standard auto insurance doesn't cover you when you rent from them).

You get a BMW depending on your zip code. Otherwise it's a Prius or a beat up honda civic.

Is traffic the price you pay for Summer 24/7?
Traffic is the price we pay for being on TV.

Some serious population density there.
Yep. I hear that in the UAE, the Irvine Spectrum is advertised like Arabic Disneyland.

Why all the camo'd BMWs in Manhattan Beach?
There's a BMW VDC and testing center there.
Hopefully I could shed some light.

Sixt has a website, check it out for prices. Two reason we went with Sixt, 1) They were AWESOME when we did ED 2) We haven't driven our 435 in awhile and wanted something similar while out there. Truth be told, their presentation at The Renaissance Hotel / LAX sucked. Total clusterfuck and not just for me, I heard multiple horror stories while waiting for a printed copy of our bill. I wanted / needed to see the total before leaving their desk. I wasn't gonna wait 24+ hours for an email to look for discrepancies.

The Prius comment is no joke.

Really upset that I missed the Irvine Spectrum ....... NOT. I cannot imagine the traffic right there.

I live across from the Irvine Spectrum (which is nothing special, I'm from MN and the MofA is much more of an attraction) and I drive a 3 series. We live 3 miles from my office so I don't have to deal with traffic on a daily basis and I avoid LA like the plague. We have an 11 month old so we don't go out too much anyways. You're off on one thing the new standard issue vehicle is the C300.

All in, not a big price to me for year round warm weather.

I guess if you're not moving around the West coast very much and tend to stay local, well then yeah, the traffic will be less of an issue. We did tend to drive midday and it was over a holiday weekend.....but still. 6+ lanes in both directions and a complete standstill.

Hmm, we've got a scheduled rental from Sixt in Phoenix for a X3. Hopefully the experience isn't too bad.

Just finished a rental with Sixt at LAX. Had a great experience with them. My choices were between SRX, gl450 and an X5.

I booked with SIxt in December for 3 weeks - Mercedes C300.

However after hearing all the horror stories I cancelled the booking which was a shame as the price for the C300 was really good.

What made me cancel in the end though was the security deposit they wanted in the small print. X3 the total booking amount which in my case would have been about $7000 USD for a security deposit!

No one at SIXT would confirm if this was indeed the case so I just cancelled.

Anyone able to shed light on the security deposit?

Eh you need to disclose what your living situation is like. Across from the spectrum puts you in The Village or Los Olivos. Both of which are about $2500/mo for a 2bd/2ba apartment roughly 1000sq ft. Not much for you, is a ton to some people. I did los olivos for 2 and a half years and it wasn't worth the money spent.

Well you hit the nail on the head, I'm in los olivos - I didn't mean to imply the rent here is cheap though (again, coming from MN it's stupid how much housing is in CA). We enjoy the amenities here, but the biggest thing is proximity to my office. I'm happy to pay a few hundred dollars extra/mo to avoid traffic (we used to be further away and required use of the toll roads). Being a Dad I can't stand sitting in traffic, I need my time with the family. My 5 minute commute has spoiled me.

OP, I do everything in my power to avoid traffic, but agree - 6 lanes of bumper to bumper is insane. I had never experienced anything even close to this growing up in MN. I'm fairly certain the widest freeways we had were 3 lanes + carpool. Not to mention, drivers in MN are actually friendly. CA drivers are nuts in my experience.

I'll give you this, there were times when we were cruising / keeping up with traffic doing 80+ mph.

Good to see all the comments above. We are actually planning a vacation to LA and rent a premium car at sixT at LA international airport. After reading all the comments, I really do not know if I should rent a car there. I was considering the Volvo V60. Any other rental companies to suggest?
Thanks.

If you get a BMW for living here, I've missed out for years! But as I've stated, 3 series are a dime a dozen here which is why I have a 4 just to be slightly different from the norm.

Yes..sunny every day...and traffic...every day. Brakes last maybe a year out here due to all the stop and go traffic. It's crazy.

Camo'd BMWs...there's a lot of testing out here. I see camo'd cars all the time. Most end up going to the Mojave/Death Valley for testing but they do a lot of testing in SoCal as well.

Where did you stay in Laguna? Surf&Sand is a pretty nice place. LaJolla is fun, but if you went to where the sea lions hang out in the cove, it's pretty smelly .

^ normal here. It can take 90min to go 20-25miles when it should take about 20 or so if it was open.
