We in North America and Australia sure are short-changed by BMW!

In Europe and the UK, BMW provides an online routing tool at https://www.bmw-routes.com/uk/en/plan-routes/index.jsp . Have a look at how easy it is to use!
Below is what they state after you create your route.

Transferring routes to your vehicle.
The route file can now be saved.

Save the route as a ZIP file, e.g. on your desktop.
Unzip the ZIP file. Select your USB stick as the destination.
A folder with the name BMWData will be created on your USB stick. The route file is saved to a subfolder called Nav, with the file format tar.gz.
Insert the USB stick into the port in your BMW and turn on the ignition.
You can now use the iDrive operating system to import your route into the navigation system.

Please note:
Earlier routes stored in the navigation system with the same name will be overwritten.

It makes you wonder????
