BMW X5 Series

I need a little help out here. I have been looking for a used X5 (Not the V8 variant), but I was told that most, if not all, of the X5's were nothing but big-time headaches. Is this correct, or what years (s) would be the "lemons"?

Thank you all very much in advance.

P.S. Looking for an X5 no later than 2014.

I would ask this question in the X5 forum.

I have a 2004 3.0i since new and still have it today. It's the longest of all the cars that I have ever owned. So that should say something about its worthiness?

Pre-2014 pretty much leaves you with the E53 (2000-2006) and E70 generation (2007-2013) X5's. They can be a headache if they were not maintained right. Finding one in good condition and with a low amount of owners/miles these days can be a bit hard, especially when limited to the 6-cylinder engine. An E53 3.0i will likely be the most reliable model due to less electronics (no electric water pump, iDrive, electric oil sensor, etc.) but these cars still have their achilles heel, mainly the cooling system, which can go at any moment, even when maintained right (went through many radiators on my E46 330i).

We had an E70 until recent in the family since new. 3rd party extended warranties took care of most service costs, however around 80k miles the car just started becoming a headache. It was always serviced at a BMW dealer, one owner car, etc. Didn't matter.

I do still see E70s driving around though, so it seems if your example is lucky and you know a good mechanic with fair pricing then it's doable.

All Good Here

Have a 2013 X35i Sport trim, ordered new (wife's car). Now has 160k miles and solid as a rock. She still says there is no other car she would rather have (perfect!). Has been garaged and dealer maintained "by the book" since new.

There have been repairs as one would expect along the way but nothing major/catastrophic. It is a very capable machine. Comfortable, handles well (2013 was last year for hydraulic steering), and is an Interstate Ballistic Missile.

Nothing but high praise for this car.

I ask because I found a 2011 X5 with 51K in miles. The only thing that troubles me is that it has already had two owners at that milage seems to me to be a red flag. I purchased my current Z4 as a third owner and will never make that mistake again.

How long has each owner had the car? Make sure to look at a CarFax. A great majority of BMW's are leased, which could explain the multiple owners. Also do have to realize 2011 means the car is over 10-years old, most people end up changing cars before that now, especially when they are German and require more maintenance, or the owners simply have the luxury of affordability and want the newest and greatest thing.

My X5 jumps up/down

My X5 jumps up/down when the air pressure in the tires is little low then when I add more air it drives normally. Is that normal behavior? For instance the rear tires 39 psi and the front tires 35 psi and if the rear tires come down to 37 or 36 and/or the front tires come down to 32 or 33 and sometimes 34, the car becomes unstable on the road, not fun to drive at all, like if I was driving in a rough field bush. Once all tires front 35/36 psi and back 39/40 psi then I can enjoy the drive. So not sure if this is a normal behavior or something else is wrong. Please advise if you ever had this issue. Thanks all !
