VM Catless Downpipe Review

Hey what’s up everyone! I wanted to write a short review on the VM catless downpipe for you guys in case you were on the fence about it (or any other downpipe for that matter). Now I was on the fence as well about pulling the trigger on a catless downpipe because I hated the smell of it when I had an f30 335. Anyhow I stumbled across someone local to my area (LA) who was selling their VM downpipe for a killer price and decided to pull the trigger. The day after I received it I had it installed and holy s**t! My 340 now sounds like an absolute BEAST and has no other exhaust mods! The crackles and pops in comfort mode are addicting and in sport/sport+ mode are a complete eargasm! The whistles from the turbo are very loud and sound amazing as well. I took a short video to try and capture the sounds while I was driving earlier, but videos definitely don’t do it justice... still hate the smell though! I will include the YouTube link here as soon as I upload it.

Just wanted to give everyone here my opinion of the downpipe and tell you that it’s definitely worth the money. You’ll also feel a little bump in power if you have a tune. In this case I have a jb4 on map 2.

Hope this helps whoever is on the fence about going with a downpipe!

Short video but hopefully you can hear it. I’m not the best at taking videos but can take another video outside the car while revving it.

Man this sounds great. I wanna make this my next mod but I heard it triggers CEL. Any thoughts on that? Also do you any type of smell coming from the dp

Yeah it sounds great! The smell is pretty bad but if you keep your windows closed you won’t smell anything. Even with windows down you’ll only smell it once you’ve been hard on the gas and stop at a light. No CEL yet and I hope none to come lol. I was able to clear the cel on my 335 with the jb4 so if I get it on this car I’ll try to do the same. You can always get an angled 02 spacer for $15-$20 on Amazon though.

I agree, the DP is a must have and totally worth the smell. The little bit of inherent B58 turbo lag on a roll is now gone, throttle response is instantaneous, and overall, the car is stupid aggressive with an intake and JB4 map 3. Turns a lot more heads than with the stock DP (unfortunately from cops too). I now throw it into comfort when I see them and that tones it down.

I used this angled defouler on the top O2 and have driven 400 miles with no CEL. A few B58 peeps around here are using the same one with no CELs:

Yeah that’s the spacer I’ve seen people running. Only problem I’m running into with my jb4 is the fuel cut off and jerkiness when shifting past 5k rpm but map 3 would be the next map to try out. Just sucks having 91 only here in Cali

Any CEL yet? I tired the o2 spacer on my n54 when I installed a downpipes years ago and it didn’t work. I’m just curious to see how things are going with your’s if the spacer can trick the sensor then I’ll buy a downpipe for my 440.

I've gone 1,000 miles with the DP and no CEL.

So everything was cool until two days ago. I got a CEL after about 250 miles but bought an angled 02 spacer. I’m gonna have it installed along with having the CEL cleared tomorrow and everything should be good. I had the same issue on my ‘15 335 with the ER down pipe but back then my jb4 could just clear the code easily. Nowadays if you’re in the US you need to get a flash tune, catted down pipe, or 02 spacer to get rid of the CEL. Seems like a lot of people with the b58 have had luck with the spacer

Wink

Over 14k and never had cel come on with 02 spacer installed. Even checked obd readiness codes and they are also good.
