I had EBC pads in my Hope mountain. Bike brakes and had the pad material fall off the backing on a set of brand new pads in morzine on the first day I got there. I would never fit them to a push bike let alone a Car/Motorbike. Their customer service is shocking & their products are utter shite.

Been a few thread on this lately so didn't want to start another one. My question is looking at the price of the discs, I've been looking at slotted and dimpled for no other reason that I think they look good. These are for the blue M Sport + brakes,

Fronts, Brembo £135 TRW £115 each
Rears, Brembo £94 TRW £58 each

Is it worth paying the extra for the Brembo's, quite happy to pay the extra for the fronts but the rears are almost double the price. Is is sensible to fit Brembo front and TRW rear since the fronts do most of the work or is mixing a bad idea, either get the TRW's or shell out for Brembo's are round?

On that Autodoc link the brembos are now £148 for 370mm (340i) - I guess this is each so £300 just for discs?! Or is this for both?

I know the 340i is quite a fast car but seems a bit OTT if its £300!

Datasheet states min thickness is 28.4mm - I wonder if these can be skimmed to prolong life? I’ll need to measure mine - does anyone know how thick they start when new? Mine have 40k miles so could be shot but we have been very easy on the brakes so interested to check if say only half the thickness has gone, plus the slight lip that has emerged seems very small.

Looking at mine on the car it seems to have the two piece design - what is the benefit of this, it is important? Does the TRW disc have the same construction?

I’m guessing changing pads and discs is pretty easy so looking to DIY - garage wanted nearly £800 just for front pads and discs which I struggle with on what is just a family estate car.

Yes the prices are per disc so around £230 - £300 for a front pair depending on which you choose. The TRW is a two piece design as are the Brembo ones, benefits are less weight and better heat dissipation. Mine has a small lip as well but also seems to be corroding around the circumference where the heat vents are but they're well over 3 years old. I've done around 35K and the idrive is saying 3200 miles before front pads although looking at them the pads look like they have a decent amount still on them. Not sure if I should just change the pads or if I should run the pads down then replace the pads and discs together.

They should be the same quality, both are OEM suppliers, TRW actually designed/make the brake system for the latest MINI's.

I guess as long as the disc is (a fair bit) above min thickness and you can skim it to a smooth flat finish then I don’t see how any edge corrosion should be a big issue - it can only be surface rust on such a thick young steel part and won’t compromise strength.

Anyone know what the original thickness of a new 370mm disc is?

Edit - duh, its on the datasheet - 30mm

So if min thickness is 28.4, that’s 1.6mm of life.

My pads are all about 4mm - I guess the sensor goes at around 3mm?

I think it goes at more like 2mm or less, but I always change at around 4mm as the performance degrades when they get that low, plus it means you can get two sets of pads in before the discs need replacing.

Only today, I replaced the discs and pads on her indoors' Fiat 500 using all Brembo parts.

Bought from Eurocarparts (where there is a 50% discount just now - Code is EGG80) for the princely sum of £45.

Up yours Arnold Clark, who wanted £242 in total!

Please note- the 50% off is only on brake parts.

Just priced up on Autodoc, but also notice some variable reviews on this supplier - I'm not in a rush so seems like it should be OK.

For 370mm/345mm M Sport + brakes all round:

TRW 2 piece slotted/perforated (M performance) discs - £120 front, £61 rear (each)
Brembo Pads - £59 front (91.2mm x 114.8mm), £49 rear (87.9mm x 71.9mm)

Total £473. Discount is 19% and runs for another 7 hours. I assume they keep cycling through new slightly changed prices & discounts so this is mainly a gimmick?

Pad sensor should be OK as is.

They also list a fitting kit is £9 front/back from A.B.S. Has pins (front only) & springs. Shown as part no. 1886Q front (and 1889Q rear) - no OEM part listed - is the right for the 370/345mm discs? Is this really necessary - I would not expect the pins to have any damage and the spring is - well a spring.

Is there any issue with fitting the M Performance parts in the blue brakes? They fronts are only £1 more than the unslotted disc at £199 so seems daft not to!

Has anyone fitted the JP Group 370mm slotted one piece disc? JP Group only £67, but probably a bit heavier. Not sure I'd notice!

(or Zimmerman - £70/£91/£100, REMSA - £63, A.B.S. £75, FERODO £77, DELPHI £92 etc.)

(PS I got some red CRC Disc Quiet so hopefully this will help kill squeal)

Use the Autodoc app for the best discount, cycles every day at 11pm, hang on for around 23%.

Pins and springs are recommended to be changed after 4 years.

I think all those cheaper ones will be one piece cast iron discs, so best avoided.

I bought replacement discs and pads but not got around to changing them. Went for Brembo pads for £90 front/back and TRW performance discs for £112 ea front and £56 ea back - so about £440 all in.

Had the wheels off today and measured the front disc thickness - the rusted lip was about 30mm, pretty much original thickness (they start at 30.0mm), where measuring the actual worn disc surface thickness was 29.0mm.

Car now at 45,000 miles, so the front discs have worn 1.0mm. At that rate they won’t meet min thickness which is 28.4mm until 72,000 miles!

Interesting. Might still swap them soon anyway as the squealing is annoying, but much more life left than I thought given the dealer said it needed new discs.

I wonder if the dealer actually measures them or just thinks “let’s see if we can sell some new discs today”.

My blue brakes will need to go back to standard discs if you need any as the front ones are drilled & grooved.
