Had a nice surprise a week ago, I was removing the front/rear steering wheel trim on my F36 in order to fit the M3 trims. When I removed the front trim I saw that my car already had a heated steering wheel fitted, I believe this is due to the fact that the car has the Lane Departure Warning vibration generator installed. So, I purchased the heated steering wheel switch (complete with cable) and the lower steering column trim panel to house the switch for £97 (brand new from BMW). A bit of VO coding later and I have a working heated steering wheel............winner

Nice! I did the opposite, I have the heated steering wheel and when I took the trim off I realised the LDW vibrator was already there so I coded LDW!

Nice one Teaston, seems like they just fit a standard wheel with all the guts installed for certain specs. I tried the heated wheel on a quick drive out tonight, very nice. Do you use the LDW much, I have it switched off most of the time, nice you got it for free though.

You never know, you might just be lucky. You need to disconnect the battery -ve cable then remove the airbag. You then just remove 1x screw at the 6 o'clock position from behind the wheel and carefully remove the front trim.

I think there two wheels, one with heating and vibrator and one with neither.

Take the cover off and you’ll see a couple of wires disappearing into the rim of the wheel.

Hi, just remove the airbag as described above and then remove the front trim from the steering wheel, it's pretty straightforward, just remember to disconnect the battery -ve cable before removing the airbag. If you've got LDW I'd say there's a good chance you'll have a heated wheel already. I can give you the part numbers you'll need for the trim and button then you'll just need to VO code the car to get it working.

Thanks. Are the part numbers the same for the F32/33?

Could you list them here?

Here you go:

Parts will be exactly the same across the F Series with the round airbag.

61316823468 (steering column lower trim panel) and

61319201736 (heated steering wheel push button).

What about the wiring to the switch? Is that already there? And if so where?

Tempted to just go ahead and order. Deal with the coding later...

I'm interested in this too. My nearly new 440i GC (due Wednesday next week) has LDW but no HSW. Keen to retrofit the HSW.

"Remove the airbag" sounds simple, how is this done please?

Cheers

The switch comes complete with the wiring and I can put you in touch with a guy who can remotely VO code the car for you, he's very good.

The wiring connects into the back of a connector plate by the indicator stalk, the wiring itself is only about 4" long.

Q
Just try having a look on YouTube and you should find a video of how to do it. it's hard to explain but basically you disconnect the battery first (so the car doesn't throw up an error when the airbag is disconnected). You then use a flat blade screwdriver, put it through the holes on the steering wheel at the 4 & 8 o'clock positions to depress a sprung latch that releases the airbag on each side and lift it off. You'll need to disconnect 1x connector to remove it completely.

Yes it's pretty obvious because the cable is quite short. Just kneel outside the drivers door and look up behind the steering wheel after removing the upper and lower trims (remove the upper one first, then the lower). You'll see a black plastic box with other wiring connectors plugged into it, there should be an empty connector slot for the switch nearest the indicator stalk. Just make sure the connector clicks as you insert it so you knows it's locked in.

I’ve got heated wheel, what other options are needed to be able to code LDW, does it need a special camera?

Not 100% sure but I would think it requires KAFAS camera to work, my car also has Speed Limit Info and Collision Warning which uses the same camera I believe. TBH, the LDW is switched off most of the time in my car as I find it annoying (I don't always indicate on motorways, terrible I know)

Yeah I thought it might need the KAFAS camera, don’t think my 335 has it...
