What's the general opinion on "dressing down"? I'm seriously considering having a '318d' badge on the back of mine.
It's badgeless at present, but every chav & boy racer seems to want to race me at the moment... And I usually just can't be bothered to engage. So would a 'lesser' badge put them off? Eagerly anticipating varying responses... lol... |

I like the idea of dressing down if I swapped for 330/335d I'd stick on a 318/320 badge, hopefully keep the dirty Glasgow thieves away as I keep my car on the street would just want it to look like any other rep mobile!

My brother had just bought an m140i and that has badging much the same same as this but I suppose that is considered ok because that's how it came from the factory?
I'm slightly confused. : Obviously aware that the full M car is a different beast altogether but When BMW bolt an m badge to the car like in the case of the m140 is this a visual thing only or is there some additional m tuning going on to the car to differentiate it from the other models? |

The M140 and M240 both are pumped up by a few BHP more than the 340 and 440 equivalents. Apart from that, there is really cock all to warrant the M badging apart from marketing. No other special parts - nada!
When (if) an M340i or M440i comes along, my bet it will be no more than a BHP hike and a rear badge to reflect it. So in the mean time - make your own M340i or M440i by adding MPPSK If you must go down the rear M badge route after MPPSK, at least make them OEM looking. IE, for a 440i, buy 2 x sets or rear M240i badges, swap a "2" for a "4" and hey presto! Instant "exclusive" M440i which looks like an OEM one. Bit fcuked for doing the same for an M340i though

What I don't get with the extra badging is that someone thinks 'hmm, I'll stick one (or more) badges on my car" . Why? To make it look better (unlikely) To impress someone ( who? and why?) . We can all stick anything we want on our cars - it's a free world - I'm just baffled as to the psychology of it.

Others may simply be tosspots who are clueless. I think it's a Bit like people who are brand conscious with the clothes they buy and feel the need to show off labels and massive great branded logos. I might need to apply for a research grant and spend a couple of years on this for a more definitive answer : |

440i has front struts not shared with any other model than an F32. Does that make them bespoke? I still believe that the power hike and marketing is the reason for the M Performance brand more than anything else.

Similarly the 340i should probably be called a 335i, having almost identical performance to the 335d, but it is harder to sell large petrols in the UK. And in the US the 530d is badged as a 535d, with similar badge inflation for other diesels, due to the relative difficulty in selling diesels there. Pretty much all BMW badging is driven by marketing rather than engineering. |
