Cool, do you get the directions in cluster/HUD?

No, that's not a feature of any maps app, it's either down to BMW or Apple eg BMW chose not to allow it or Apple chose not to.

I'd love CarPlay directions in the HUD but no can do.

Didn't try cluster but then I don't have that anyway/normally.

Haha

I wasn't going there anyway, but I'll bear it in mind

One downside - there didn't seem to be a way of disabling auto day/night mode - the night mode seemed too dark and would I think be difficult to follow.

Day mode only came on when I turned the lights off - the phone app has a day and night mode but that didn't change the CarPlay display.

Not massively impressed so far:

1) Doesn't show the speed limit on small/residential roads - both iDrive and Apple Maps show this.

2) Voice directions are verbose and given that it cuts out any music etc you are playing, it can be jarring. The former is a personal preference but I'd rather they have the choice of lowering the volume of whatever is playing rather than pausing.

3) Whatever you have playing in the background does not automatically resume when the voice nav has stopped and in some cases you have to resume from the app that was playing, manually.

4) This is the killer item - it doesn't sufficiently highlight the planned route, fine perhaps in the daytime but at night, it's just a dark mess. You can't force it to use day colours at night either.

Some of these may be Apple/BMW issues and not Google, but in any case, I'm not that impressed so far.

Will keep using especially for longer journeys rather than the commute - on the plus side, it took me in to work with a slight change of route which was faster (at least today)

How did you get Google Maps to show up in CarPlay? I have GM on my phone but it's not there in CP like shown above.

My bad. GM was not updated on my phone.

Latest update:

With Google Maps running, my connected phone (iPhone 8+) keeps dropping its CarPlay connection when on a call.

When I stopped Google Maps navigation, the phone remained connected to the car as expected.
